How Did You Discover McIntosh?

I think I was 15 or 16 and an adult mentioned McIntosh in what I think was a discussion about stereo or music. I had never heard of them but it stuck in my head because the touted reasoning was that it was "the best".

Eventually I noticed and ad for McIntosh in the back of a Stereo Review or a High Fidelity magazine inviting me to send away for literature about the product. After waiting what I think was a significant amount of time a large envelope arrived in the mail containing product brochures and information about the company. I was fascinated by pictures of technicians in lab coats and cotton gloved hands holding individual components and the text exclaiming that McIntosh meticulously chose and inspected every piece that went into their product.

Anyway what impressed me the most was a brochure with a large head on photo of a Mac 1900 in a slant leg case and somewhere in the literature disclosing a total harmonic distortion of .2%. I thought that must be pretty good because I think I judged any other stereo equipment I read about from that time on by that standard.

I just loved that brochure and read what it said about the 1900 over and over again. Someday I was going to own a Mac!

I still have the packet McIntosh mailed me when I fired off the card in the mail from one of dad's magazines. I was maybe 14. Signed letter from Gordon Gow and all!

When I was 12 or 13 my Dad took me along to the audio store he frequented in Erie, PA. I saw those blue meters and I was hooked. Unfortunately it took me 30 years or more until I could afford Mac gear but I guess it was worth the wait.

I played in a nightclub band thru high school and college. Our sax player had McIntosh tube gear playing through classis JBL's. I don't know how he was able to afford such expensive gear at that age (we were in our late teens, early twenties) but I fell in love with the sound. I vowed to myself that someday I would own a system centered around McIntosh. I was in my 50's when I achieved that goal.

I was twenty in a friends house and he owned a Mcintosh and it was something I had never seen before. Well four decades later I am finally going to be an owner too.
