Rock is dying?

As I was listening to Bob Seger this morning enjoying a cup of coffee, I stumbled across an article in “The Week”.

The author makes some excellent points in his piece and for giggles I checked the “Billboard Top 100” and realized that I essentially know nothing of pop music today. I am neither bragging nor complaining about this, but although I have heard of some of the acts, I have never really listened to them. Being curious, I listened to “Senorita” by Shawn Mendes. It is an auto-tuned technological marvel, perhaps, but it really does nothing for me. As I sit here on my iPad typing this and streaming music in high resolution from a France-based company through my Silenzio, changing the color of my lights with my Philips Hue app, answering a text from my brother in Michigan on my Apple Watch, I find myself feeling just a little technophobic vis a vis music. Popular music doesn’t seem to elicit any sort of visceral response like music a few decades ago. Remember, Nirvana and the grunge movement is now 20 years old.
This article got me to thinking when was the last time there was a “popular” rock album? I get that this is somewhat of an oxymoron in that great rock from yesteryear was largely counterculture, but the music of the past 10 years just seems to be lacking and has little appeal to me, and I would guess, the majority of the folks on this site.
Anyway, it is a good short read for the Sunday constitutional.

I think that Rock and Pop have always intersected yet in my mind are different genre. I am not sure what the delineation point is but you make a good point that much of current and recent pop music is auto-tuned, made with music machines and without the real instruments used in "rock". Pop has always been directed at the teen and early 20's age group. This seems to be the biggest consumer of the Pop genre with current acts such as Taylor Swift.

No one is going to place acts like Captain and Tennille, ABBA or bubble gum music the in the rock category.

I find today's Americana genre a comfortable place to search for new artists.

I'm willing to listen to anything.....for about 15 seconds. If I am not captured in those moments I escape to another place. I like all sorts of music but it has to reach my soul or I rarely return.

That is a interesting comment. I was watching a special last week about Motown and it's hit factory. One of the points Berry Gordy made to his songwriters and arrangers was you have about 10-15 seconds to grab someones attention. They then played the opening tracks from several of their iconic hits. That is exactly what they did. Most of those songs had a hook whether we knew it at the time or not. When I get a chance I will give you some examples.

Last time I did a rock concert some 7 years ago, Def Leppard, Judas Priest and another former biggie had to do their acts on the same night and they still didn't sell out a 9-10K venue. Sad but true.
