The best sounding one I've heard is Karajan's Brahms Symphonies set. A sticker on the cover states they used the original analog tapes, so I trust there has been no nasty digital intervention. I think most of the other re-issues come from a digital copy.

Hi - This is based on the Karajan set from 1963/64 - large tulips, released in 1965. If you're concerned about provenance (and who isn't) NM pure analog box sets of the original are easily available at v reasonable cost. Look for catalog nbr SKL 133/36 with a Grand Prix du Disque sticker on the cover.

Re-issues from DG have been incredibly disappointing. Spent big bucks on the Vienna Philharmonic 175th anniversary box and it has been some of the worst vinyl (pops/clicks/hissing from the first play) with very dry, tinny sound.
Worst offender of the set was the Kleiber Beethoven 7 and the Wagner overtures/orchestral music with Karajan. Schumann 3 with Bernstein was acceptable, however. |

True that, Tima! A bit of a outlier in the Bruckner world and would have expected him to go for 7,8, or 9 for such an occasion!
