If you want to do some in-room measurements, let me know...I am all set up with that and can help get you started.

Here for example, are some in-room measurements that I've some with my setup.

My set up when I started playing around with my Rel. Gold trace is my speaker w/o sub, purple trace with the sub integrated.



With sub set up to produce the larger peak you see between 20 and 50 Hz (to provide flattest "perceived" in-room bass response).


Rather than an omni mike, you'll need a "calibrated" microphone, like a Dayton EMM-6 or Behringer; in particular you need the calibration file for your specific microphone. Also need a mike preamp and a software package, like Room Eq Wizard, which is free and runs on both PCs and or Macs.

Thanks, Puma Cat, nice curves (I'd say that to Vesuvius, too... ). Anyway, I'll definitely take you up on that offer, and, yes, when I said omni, I meant the calibrated ones...such as the Dayton. It's the mic pre-amp that I've been trying to figure out. I'm planning on using REW...what preamp do you use? I've been wanting one with balanced outputs to go to my i-7...is that the way to go?

Muchas gracias, David...my wife may want your visit to wait until things get straightened up a bit from all this stereo madness, but we'll have you over! (The place looks like a used record store...and now a used equipment store!) Having known John for about 25 years, he got a special exemption.

We actually plan to completely redecorate the room...as it's not really decorated, now...just a random rug & chair. This paint color went on the walls only a handful of months ago, but with the decision to go blue, we're probably going to change it...although we think the combo looks better than expected. We may do carpet, lighter walls, blue accents...but I should probably leave AA and visit a home decor forum before I get any deeper.

Also, thanks, Dan and soundslikemusic...the Sophias will surely be enjoyed to their fullest. A quick word of appreciation to the whole AA family for your support, friendship, and shared knowledge...it's made this acquisition even that much more enjoyable!

I use the M-Audio MobilePre USB, it's nice because it's bus-powered via your USB port and provides phantom power for the mike.

Outputs to the microphone are balanced, but the outputs that are used to go from the Mobilepre to your I-7 are 1/4". All you need, though, is an 1/4" to XLR cable, which are cheap and readily available...

I use a 1/4" to RCA cable for my setup, and the MobilePre comes with a long USB cable to go from your mike preamp to your laptop.

Just be sure to get cables long enough so you can place the mike where you sit between the length of the output cable to the amp and the cable going from the MobilePre to the microphone.

You can then play around with your speaker placement in the room and sitting position to optimize both. I found that moving the microphone position a little as 6" will give a different in-room response. I could even see the difference in taking the grilles off the Dyns.
