Quartz if the budget allows.

Heat (>400-degrees), stain, and scratch resistant. Non-porous (antimicrobial) surface requires less maintenance while being impermeable to bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Love our granite. Immune to hot, cold and difficult to scar (minor chopping, etc.). Dirty? Pour hot water from your tea kettle directly on the surface and wipe clean. Better yet........ have you wife do all that.

Tough to beat the beauty of granite but there is one problem... The natural stone like granite is typically radioactive. Not only can the granite have radioactive thorium, radium and uranium but they also break down into radon. No doubt the levels vary depending on the presence of “veins” of such radioactive material. Now, they say it is unlikely granite can cause any additional exposure above typical background levels but I’m not aware of anyone actually testing it when it is imported? Some may not be concerned, some may...

We went from Formica to Corian, then a few years later replaced the Corian with granite. The Corian was nice, but it dulled after a few years and showed scuffs and scratches. One advantage of Corian is you can have a Corian sink and have a perfectly smooth transition from counter to sink. Also a Corian sink is quiet. Bottom line, Corian is nice and practical, but there’s nothing like granite for natural beauty.

I’ve heard that the state of the art for composites has really improved since Corian. My kitchen guy of 20 years previously steered us away from corian and is now steering us to other composites.

Granite was our pick, but have no problem with quartz; both will have the color choices that will go along with what your trying to achieve. Consider breaking it up as well for contrast, say the island over the counter top. Have fun!

We replaced corian countertops with granite about 2 years ago. What a difference. I would drop corian from your list of contenders.
