As far as heat generation and temperature of heat sinks with a pure Class A amplifier, they will actually run hottest when there is no power going to the speakers (i.e. volume is set to minimum or no input signal.) This is because as Ivan explained they run at full power continuously, and when any portion of the output is being sent to the speaker that power is dissipated in the speaker with only the unused portion of power dissipated as heat in the heat sinks. With no power being sent to the speakers the full rated power of the output stage has to be dissipated in the heat sinks. Kind of counter-intuitive but if you think about it in power usage terms it actually makes sense. Class A/B amplifiers tend to run hotter as you play them louder due to how they maintain proper bias.

No argument there. Well know fact about idle heat being the highest in Class A amps. However, per Acuuphase provided data, the 12w idle power difference is about 7%. The height difference is, however, about 25%. Assuming that 25% increase translates to the heatsinks, then it would likely run cooler. With no real data on heatsink area, it is only supposition.
Whatever, think Greg has made a great selection with the E-800.

I just took a look at the poll results. Almost 50/50.
I am now at the 250 hour mark on the E-800 and will engage in some critical listening over the next few weeks. As the saying goes "only time will tell" !

Well....the E-800 almost did not make the cut. At 250 hours or so, it was good, had plenty of power but was not exceptional. I actually thought about selling it and going to an all tube rig or Luxman 900 separates. I am glad I gave it more time. With 400 hours on the clock, it is sounding much better-producing a much more engaging sound with plenty of detail and great soundstage.
The verdict - I love it.
