Tree of Life
We just saw Tree of Life this afternoon. Terrance Malick has either made one of the most complex or one of the simplest movies ever made. For the first 45 minutes I though I was watching a National Geographic special mixed with shots from the Hubble Telescope. This was supposed to be creation I guess. At this point it was 95% voice over no dialogue.
I guess I go to the movies to escape and not be forced to figure out the meaning of every character or scene. The cinematography and imagery was outstanding. Those who have seen The Thin Red Line know how Malick can paint a story with visuals. It was a very different movie from what I expected from the trailers. Brad Pitt was very good, Sean Penn (Older Jack) just moped around looking lost in Armani suits. The kid who played Young Jack showed all of the angst of a 14 year old dealing with a bullying father and seeing himself become very much like his Dad, The Film won the Palm D'Or at Cannes and I read where the credits where met with both jeers and while applause. I just give it a shake of the head. I am sure it will be on the next Oscar's list. Jim |
