In 2008, Ron-C stated:

"Mc uses Chinese Shugaung small tubes. Did you know this is the only tube facility that uses clean rooms, like an IC foundry, to produce tubes in? These are very high quality and neutral sounding tubes.

Both EH and SED output KT88s are used. McIntosh does test each amp with the stock tubes and the amps all meet specified power and other performance specifications.

Many do 'tube roll' which is fine as long as you are using tubes that operate properly and will work in a McIntosh circuit. Measuring the performance of a unit after the tubes are changed will certainly open some eyes. If you are hearing a great difference in sound you may not be putting in the best tubes or maintaining factory new performance.

Thanks,
Ron-C "

Best Sirs,

Bob

Bob.......Ron C is the same guy that said factory power cords were recommended and there was no reason to change them. Ron C says a lot of things. He preaches the factory mantra, you know, don't mess with what the factory is doing because we know more than you. Well, you can swallow that advice (blue pill) or you can enjoy the fruits available with high quality upgrades (red pill). Ron knows what side of his paycheck the authorized signature is on. He's not likely to jeopardize that income stream.

No offense intended. Ron C is a great guy and has helped many people, but he moves to the company drum beat and not likely to stray from the fold.

Those Shugaung small tubes he talked about may have measured well but they do not sound nearly as good as many other small tubes, not to mention they are noisy when compared to premium tubes. It didn't take McIntosh long to find a Russian manufacturer of small tubes once people started griping about finding $3.00 Shugaung - Made in China tubes in their expensive new amps and preamps. If they were that great, why did they move to McIntosh branded JJ Tubes? And that line about rolling tubes "that operate properly and will work in a McIntosh circuit", that gave me a chuckle. If the circuit is designed to use a KT88, a 12AT7, or a 12AX7, any manufacturer's tubes that are made to the respective tube specifications will operate just fine "in a McIntosh circuit". There's no magic there.

None taken Dan -- they could be using JJ's now but when the amps first came out, the Svetlana KT88's with round holes prompted the service bulletin "DO NOT USE" alarm. Then they change to Svetlana square holes and somewhere after switched to SED's. It's all confusing, top secret for whatever reason, but; the bottom line is and held by a majority of todays McIntosh tube owners & don't understand why they don't load 'em up with Gold Lion reissues (like they did with the older MC275's with original Gold Lions).

Best Sir,

Bob

Ron - C just confirmed & the guessing game (for me anyways) is no more:

"Bob,

We are currently using JJ but used to use SEDs until supply got bad.

Thanks,
Ron-C"

Best to everyone,

Bob

Not true -- they only warrant their tubes for 90 days anyways & equipment for 3 years -- original purchaser, thru dealer network, with receipt showing serial number

http://audioresearch.com/en-us/compa...anty-statement

With ARC and others with KT120 & KT150's -- there aren't many tube options available.

Best Sir,

Bob

Bob.......I just checked the McIntosh branded KT88's in my tube cabinet. They have the rectangular holes, so I assume they are either Svetlana or SED tubes. Other than the McIntosh labels and the Made in Russia label there are no other markings on the KT88's. One of these days I may put them in the amps just to see how they sound compared to the Gold Lions I currently have installed.
