Maybe you could have saved a lot when you were buying your system!

If we are confessing, I listened to my new integrated amp with the left/right inputs from my CD player reversed before I realized it! Now, in my defense, I was listening to a lot of solo piano recordings, so it wasn't too noticeable. Then some chamber music, which slightly aroused my suspicions since the imaging seemed off. Symphonic music confirmed the problem!

We've all goof up at one time or another. Years ago I was testing an MCD500 direct to the amps from the variable outputs. After the listening session I moved the balanced interconnects from the MCD500 variable outputs back to the fixed outputs but neglected to move the interconnects from the MC501's back to the preamp and reconnect the preamp back to the amps. I don't know what I was thinking but when I placed another CD in the MCD500 and pressed play the fixed outputs from the MCD500 connected directly to the power amps created a wide open volume level that damn near gave me a heart attack. Instinct caused me to jump for the preamp volume control which did nothing, then I finally thought to press Stop on the MCD500. Holy molly, the adrenaline rush had my heart pounding. Good thing I took my blood pressure pill that day. Thank goodness for McIntosh Power Guard which automatically kept the volume below any outrageous distortion levels or I would have probably lost some speakers. I realized immediately what I had failed to do and felt stupid for the mistake. Fortunately nothing was damaged except my ego. .

I guess I should also come clean. In my early days as an audiophile, I once listened for weeks in mono without realising it. I had an A&R A60 amplifier and it had a mono switch. It was very embarrassing when I eventually realised it.

Now imagine if your ears were all blocked up and needed a cleaning

I was listening to some Mono Clasical a few weeks ago, and thought the recording was thin and lacking, then I realized I had only turned on the tube amps on my tri-amped system. No bass panels or subs! the recording was fine, only the operator was lacking! :^(
Regards,
Jim
