24/192 Music Downloads ...and why they make no sense
This is a very interesting article. I fully believe I can hear dramatic differences between redbook CD rips and 24/192 and a huge difference in DSD/DSF files.

Technically this is a good article. It has been around for a few years. Worth reading if you want to delve a bit (sic) into digital audio concepts.
One of the main points worth extracting is that 24 bits does not add increased resolution but it does offer increased dynamic range. This fact is often confused and occasionally presented in misleading diagrams.

I've read the article.
While I understand the science, I know I can hear the dynamic difference between 16/44.1, 24/96 & 24/192 digital audio. I much prefer the 24 bit files.

However, all this has nothing to do with whether or not the 24 bit recording/mastering version is superior in sound quality to the 16 bit version.

Regardless to what you elect to assign the reason, I hear a difference. Some recordings obviously, some others not at all. The science is interesting when explained well (like this). Of course it causes me to wonder about my perceptions.

Several of my hi-rez favorites I've not compared to the cd directly ... wonder how often what we are hearing is simply better mastering and better recordings to begin with?

The differences we hear are in the MASTERING of the various recordings not the formats.
Some redbooks are better than the SACD, some SACDs are better than the redbooks. |
