Oppo BDP-83 and BDP-83SE Firmware Update
You gotta love how Oppo keeps its customers up to date with the latest necessary firmware updates with full explanations of what the firmware entails. I wish Binghamton would learn this lesson.
Today I received an email from Oppo telling me about the newest firmware update for the BDP-83 and BDP-83SE, two players long out of production but still being supported by the company. A new firmware was released for your OPPO BDP-83/BDP-83SE Blu-ray player on November 26, 2014. This firmware resolves the disc loading failure issue with the "X-Men: Days of Future Past (BD)" released by 20th Century Fox. Customers reported that after inserting the Blu-ray disc, the player would report "Wrong Disc" error and eject the disc. This is caused by the new "BD+" protocol (or Digital Rights Protection system) applied to this title which requires longer decryption time than allowed by the player. This firmware resolves this issue by adjusting the decryption time. Getting the New Firmware - If your OPPO Blu-ray player has a connection to the Internet, you can easily and quickly upgrade over its Internet connection. Otherwise, you can upgrade via USB thumb drive or a self-created firmware upgrade disc. Detailed step-by-step instructions are available. You can also submit a request for a firmware upgrade disc to be mailed to you if none of these options are suitable for you. The firmware is the system software that controls the features and functions of the player. Since the Blu-ray Disc specifications are still new and evolving, it is quite possible that recently-released Blu-ray discs use certain new features that were not available when the player was designed and sold. To ensure the best viewing experience, it is important to keep the player’s firmware up-to-date. If your OPPO Blu-ray player is connected to the internet, you may upgrade the player directly over the internet. My Oppo BDP-95 is connected to the Internet via an Ethernet cable to my router. My BDP-83 and BDP-83SE are not connected to the Internet so I will go to Oppo's website and download the firmware update to a USB thumb drive and install it through the USB inputs on each player. It is a simple and painless process that only takes a few minutes. Thumbs up to Oppo for continuing to support their legacy players. This is how you earn trust and keep customers coming back. .

I got the same email. I'm not using my 83SE right now, but I suppose I should unbox it and upgrade the firmware.

Terry.......Even if you don't want to unpack your BDP-83SE right now, go ahead and download the firmware file folder and save it to your Document file folder. You can always transfer the unzipped firmware file folder to a thumb drive when you're ready to install it.
I updated the firmware in both the BDP-83 and BDP-83SE this afternoon. Piece of cake.
