Great to hear that we have a new stargazer! I have been stargazing for 3 decades with a lot of different telescopes.

The 4 mm gives you a whopping magnification of x312 and that is pushing the 90 mm optics far to much in almost every case (and I have owned the ETX). The image will be very dark, incredible hard to get focused and because of the narrow field of view the object will move very fast. Also, if you have x312 every little touch on the telescope or the tripod will be magnified with that amount so it is very hard to follow the object or actually see it, because it only takes a little touch and it will take seconds for the vibrations to disappear.

Try the 4mm on Saturn or Jupiter if you want to test it...That is, honestly, the only object it can work on, if your skies are perfect. And try to test it on a far away earthly object on the middle of the day. That will give you a pretty clear idea why it is almost impossible to use x312 with 90mm optics on stellar objects. And of course, don´t put the view near the sun because the intensity of the rays can make you blind.

So if you were wanting more detail than the 26 which one would you use... I am an absolute neophyte. I also have a 9mm and a 2x Barlow

First try the Barlow on your 26mm eyepiece. This will get you the equivalent of 13mm, twice the magnification of the 26mm. The advantage of a Barlow is the eye relief, the distance you need to keep your eye away from the eyepiece stays the same.

Then you can try the 9mm, which is approaching my the limit of what your scope can handle.

A 4mm is useless, just provided so the marketing guys can advertise a high magnification.

Well, to be fair Meade does not sell the ETX90 with a 4mm. And for a high quality small refractor 4mm can work fine. But not for a medium quality 90mm MC with 1250mm focal length.

Can I use other eyepieces with the TX that are not Plossils? with higher magnification?

Also is getting a brands like televue worth it for this type of scope? Would better quality eyepieces make a difference with this scope?

For stargazing you should aim for broader views and therefore lower magnifications. It is far more spectacular to view the stars, galaxies, clusters and nebulas with lower magnifications. And regarding high end eyepieces you can compare it to audio and to balance the quality of each component. But if you are on a quest and the ETX is only the beginning there is no reason, except financial, to get some high quality eyepieces, as a 300 dollar TeleVue Nagler, because you can use them with great result even on high end telescopes.

I strongly recommend Cloudy Nights Forum for a ton of great info about astronomy equipment.

Default Astronomy can be very similar to high-end audio

Since a night in 1962 I got hooked on astronomy. Magnifying light can be much like reproducing and amplifying sound. Good optics are critically important. So, early exploration with an inexpensive telescope is great fun. But start applying really good optics and it just gets better and better. With today's telescopes, in particular refractors like a 4" or 5" Takahashi and some high quality eyepieces (think $600+) it becomes a whole new thing. Highly recommended.

Yep, there is nothing like a really good refractor. I'd like to upgrade mine someday. They can and do get pretty expensive...

Yep, and the mount needs to be just about as expensive. But, really worth it.
