It's funny - now that I think back to every guest here and even at other homes, people always get close, bend over, look REALLY close, but never touch. Then they ask questions. Not once has someone tried to paw at any equipment. I don't know how I'd react - but it'd probably be similar to Dan's reaction. I know I do that with wine when someone starts manhandling my higher-end section (oh my god if they dropped one...) - but thankfully that rarely happens (usually they ask me to show them rather than touch themselves).

Man you guys are a tough crowd. There are a lot more things in my house I worry about someone damaging than a $800 cartridge on my turntable.

This one happened today. Washer delivery guys decides that instead of turning off the water at the supply hoses, he would shut off the main. It just happens to be in a closet behind my left front main speaker and the door does not clear the speaker. I came home after numb nuts had already shoved the door against the back of the speaker and wedged himself inside to close the valve. When I learned that he had shut off the main water I go flying downstairs to tell him not to do it again. He is going down the stairs ahead of me, I tell him to stop, and he ignores me. Instead, HE DOES IT AGAIN. Then he says, "Oh did you say something?" I was so angry I just glared at him. His jacket had dragged through the dust on the speaker and the door was stopped by the speaker terminals. The speaker was not damaged, but that was purely luck. A zipper dragged over a piano black finish is a recipe for disaster. I still wonder why I did not kill him on the spot.

Randy.......I loathe disrespectful, inconsiderate people, be they workmen or otherwise. I can be one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, or one of the biggest asshole you'll ever have the misfortune to cross paths with. It is strictly up to the other individual. I always extend the olive branch first, but if you want to see some thorns I can do that, too.

I can understand your anger and frustration. It sounds like you were less aggressive than I would have been under the same circumstances. I am thankful to hear no damage was done to your expensive speakers. Workmen in my home irritate me simply by their presence even when things are going well, but I never take my eyes off them. As unfortunate as it is, responsible, skilled craftsmen with personal integrity are a rare breed these days.
