Vasks: Distant Light and Piano Quartet & Summer Dances
Vadim Gluzman (violin), Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Hannu Lintu BIS (2020), via Qobuz From Presto’s list of new releases this week. Interesting music, some of it beautiful, some of it less so.

Inspired by Ed, playing this album again. I don't exaggerate when I say I've streamed it at least a dozen times already.

Roland De Lassus - Inferno
Cappella Amsterdam, Daniel Reuss Qobuz 24/96 I liked this very much. Though Orlande de Lassus displays overflowing vitality in his secular music, matters are quite different in his sacred music: the twelve motets assembled on this album (most of them composed in the last years of his life) bespeak a profound melancholy and show not only his ability to make use of a wide range of stylistic devices, but also great subtlety in the art of rhetoric. An expressive palette handled in masterly fashion by Daniel Reuss at the head of Cappella Amsterdam! © harmonia mundi

Seicento! The Virtuoso Early Italian Violin
Imaginarium Ensemble, Enrico Onofri Qobuz 24/96 A nice journey! Belgian label. Small size, four gut strings, a short bow were at beginning the ingredients of the magic. Such a magic happened in Italy, the cradle of the violin, during the seventeenth century. “Seicento!” is therefore a multifaceted time-travel through the Early Baroque, from Venice to Sicily, exploring the wonders of the first violin virtuosos and their dexterous-passionated playing. A collection of musics born looking at Caravaggio, Bernini and Borromini’s masterworks. © Passacaille
