Absolute Love and Emotion
Hello folks,
Just a few words to tell you again how much I love my Shindo gear. I thought I would sell my CCQs for reasons I won't discuss here. But each time that I have a potential buyer, I reconnect the Shindo amps and get fully in love again with them. I remember very precisely in 30 seconds of any music while I felt deeply in love with them. And I change my mind. No other gear gets me drawn in the music like Shindo. I am listening to the music. I forget completely the system. This is truly unique in my experience of hifi. My Shindo set up ( Giscours / CCQs ) is the only one to give me such pleasure. Its sound does not impress all visitors. Many amps can be more impressive. But the Shindo sound involves me in the recording like no other one. Shindo is not for everyone. But it makes my soul vibrate like no other gear. And I bet that's the same for all folks here in the Shindo forum. Long Life to Shindo. I will die with my Shindo set up.

Jerome.......That is quite the testimony for Shindo. I am happy you have discovered components that touch you so deeply.

I am also thinking of selling my Shindo (see previous post for "reasons" -- or more likely "rationalizations" -- basically I am enjoying the freedom of a solid state system which I can leave on all day, or fire up for a quick 15 minutes listening session, etc.) Currently, my McIntosh MDA1000->C34V->Musical Fidelity Tube Buffer->MC250 going into the Tannoys sounds immensely satisfying and, of course, delicious. It lacks the refinement of Shindo, however, I am aware that some of its deliciousness comes at the expense of detail and speed. But, on the other hand, I am getting a newfound "freedom from tube concerns." However, based on past experience, I believe that putting the Shindo back in service to demonstrate it to a potential buyer is likely to have the same result you've had: Heck no, I'm not selling this. This is what happened to me with the MDA1000 some 2-3 years ago ... and man am I glad I did not sell it. I am not rushing into anything, but I appreciate and can identify 100% with your post and experience. Alberto |

You are with Serge the two persons who lighted my fire to discover this brand. I understand perfectly your need to get out of tubes since you listen to your system a lot. My advice is that if you do not need the money, do not sell your wonderful Shindo units. Put them aside. After a few months with SS, put them back on duty again. You will get the feeling that you are 20 years younger !!

Jerome, your systems and mine have some surprising similarities. In particular, I have two pairs of speakers similar to yours---a modern British 3-way (Spendor SP-100 for me, Harbeth 40.1 for you), and a homemade 2-way using vintage drivers and the Altec 32 horn. My DIY speakers use an Altec 802-8G compression driver on a 32A aluminum horn and a Jensen 15" woofer (P15LL) in a sealed cabinet. The speaker was inspired by the Western Electric 753 which used the same woofer and same horn although with WE designations but with a WE 713 compression driver. The 713 drivers are way out of my budget, but the 802-8G can sound quite nice too. I developed my own crossover which is a 1200 Hz 12db design, pretty straightforward except I incorporated an equalization network. The eq circuit was actually designed by Altec for the same compression driver in a 32 horn. It comes from the Altec 9849A which used the 802-8G in a 32B horn with a 12" woofer. My eq network is in the high-frequency circuit only and it does a nice job smoothing the response and extending the HFs. The homemade speakers sound really nice but then so do my Spendors just in different ways. That's why I end up swapping them every few weeks or so.
Have you published any details of your DIY speakers? |
