I would not use cedar or pine. The wood is much to soft and would easily be damaged.

If you are replacing shelves, I would replace them with maple cutting boards. I bought a huge maple cutting board for the top of my VPI turntable stand. Because cutting boards are strips of wood that are glued together, I think they isolate better than a solid piece of wood.

If you are building a rack from scratch, I would go with either maple or oak. I really like the stands that Timbernation makes. If it were me, I would probably do something like one of their racks.

I would recommend oak. Glad to see you are replacing glass with wood.

The best is combination from various kinds of wood actually.

Budget way: I used IKEA Hemnes tables instead of chinese glass rack, total - 285 USD. I can show photos.

Mati,

As some mentioned maple (arce en nuestro país) would be one of the best alternatives.

I would use a furniture grade of plywood and get the matching banding strip for the edges. It is avaliable in many flavors, oak, maple etc. It is very strong and will not warp under a heavy component. and the options are numerous with different stains.

Could pine potentially exude a sap like substance? Obviously I'm not much of a woodworker, just thinking out loud.
