The KAB is an active device (powered via a wallwart or similar), but understand it doesn't induce degradation of sound. One trick I heard was of installing couple layers of felt or foam under the feet of the TT so there is no direct contact with the TT feet and the shelf it sits on. That's a rather inexpensive option to see if that clears the problem. Good luck, Best Sir, Bob

George -
Might be a good idea to post on the VPI site. They have some pretty knowledgeable VPI users. They have helped me in the past and I am also running a Prime with a Zephyr MIMC. Most every time I have had an issue I did a "re-setup" and resolved them. Good luck in solving the problem.

This could be a drive system issue. If your Prime has a rim drive the driver wheel may be a bit out of round, even a wee bit not visible to the eye will cause what you hear. Or a belt that is out of round or worn in a particular spot. That can be why you only hear the noise on the first part of a record; the vibration dissapates as it goes further into the platter.

It is belt drive so I'll try swapping out the belt. I'm also going to clean and lube the bearing this weekend to see if that helps. If nothing else works I'll likely try the KAB device Bob mentioned. Thanks guys!!

I use a KAB RF-1 with my Aries 3x3 and it solved my rumble issue with no degradation of sound, at least to my 60 yo ears.

Update ... figured out at least what the problem is. On the early part of the record the arm is rocking back and forth from an Azimuth standpoint. By the second track it gets stable. The woofers are moving in sync with the rocking of the tonearm. Cleaned and lubed the bearing tonight and that didn't help. The headshell sites completely level when the record isn't moving but on the first track it just goes to rocking back and forth. Very strange! My new Levinson preamp does have a subsonic filter on the phono section so I'm using that for now and bypassing my ARC PH8 until I have a better solution.

George - VPI offers an arm modification called the Dual Pivot adapter which provides an additional pivot point and eliminates arm wobble. Many users have reported improved sound as well from having a more stable arm. I don't see it listed on VPI's site but it's available from their dealers and is a relatively easy installation. Cost is $150 and Ivan should be able to get it for you. This should resolve your problem at a nominal cost!
