So, I invited him over to my house for lunch and showed him my Ruger Mini 14, I also showed him what a .223 round looked like. He had fired rifles when he was younger and he had no problems with the rifle. I went into my safe and pulled out a stock for the Mini 14 that had a pistol grip and a telescopic stock.

I explained to him that if I put the stock with the pistol grip and telescopic stock on the rifle it would become an "Assault Rifle". I merely added cosmetic features to an existing rifle and it became an instrument of war. He still wouldn't believe me.

I then went to the internet and showed him information that determined how a semi-automatic rifle became an "Assault Rifle" and he still wouldn't believe me. I also showed him that in some states you only had to add one cosmetic feature to the rifle to make it evil.

Good man, smart man, former Navy man, brainwashed man. Bobblehead for my side of the isle.
Keith.......Good post. Thank you for that story. There are plenty of smart people in this world. Unfortunately smart is not synonymous with wisdom. It is nearly impossible to erase 10 to 20 years of indoctrination, particularly when fear is the catalyst used to embed the message. For the past two generations the notion of gun free America has been taught in government funded schools. These people are now 20 to 40 year old adults who have this imprinted memory from early childhood about the evil of guns and the idea of peace and harmony in a utopian gun free society. In their minds this gets played over and over, while at the same time being fostered and supported by their counterparts in education and mass media. It has gotten so ridiculous now that a kindergarten child playing can't even point his thumb and forefinger like a gun without being removed from class, humiliated, and disciplined. This type of mind control is part and parcel of the cradle to grave indoctrination through fear that is being taught everyday in our schools and universities. I read many years ago somewhere that an entire country's government could be changed in two generations within the schools. At the time I did not consider that true but I can see it now.

I live in a rural area of north Florida. Out here in the country away from the cities nearly everyone is armed, either carrying on their person, in their vehicle, in their homes, or all of the above. It is understood that you risk being shot if you trespass in a man's home, try to do harm to his family, or try to rob or carjack someone in a parking lot or intersection. For a criminal to assume someone around here is unarmed would be a big mistake. No one around this area spends much time worrying about guns or feels uncomfortable or unsafe with them in the home. It is just a way of life in a rural area. Guns are tools to be used when a particular task calls for them, nothing more, nothing less. Like a pocket knife they go unused until there is a need. I rarely see a gun other than my own unless I am at the range, but I know they are there. So does the rest of the community. I'm fine with that.

Of the 132 posts on this thread I suspect I could count the number that deal with the OP's original question on two hands.

The vast majority of the remainder are clearly in the political realm, which supposedly is "strictly" forbidden under the forum rules which every member agreed to abide by.

The fact that this discussion has not devolved into personal attacks makes it no less disagreeable. I don't come here to hear people's opinions on contentious political debates.

Those who respond with "if you don't like it, don't read it" are missing the point. The collegial atmosphere of this forum is its greatest strength, due in no small part to the quick enforcement of the forum rules by the moderators.

DAN, where is your typical strict discipline? Would you not agree there are likely forum members who are equally passionate about the issue but choose to follow the rules which you are empowered to enforce but so wantonly disregard? One member even expressed regret that he pays dues for this. So much for collegiality.

IVAN, it is well known that you are a passionate firearm enthusiast. At least a handful of members have gently suggested that you close this thread. Perhaps you could move it to another section, entitled "Politics: Enter at Your Own Risk."

Huh....the first high capacity assault rifle was an air gun and it was in use 12 years PRIOR to the ratification of the 2nd Amendment. Check out this 20-round high capacity semi-automatic, "wind rifle" from Austria, circa 1779!

Mike.......Owning a gun or not owning a gun is not political unless you make it so. It is a personal choice. I am as passionate about shooting sports and self defense as I am about audio. I think the thread has been quite civil without arguments that became personal or overtly political. Expressing one's opinion that differs from others is not in and of itself political, although I will relinquish that this thread has been a hot topic. None the less I can respect your position on why you come to this forum and enjoy other topics. I think this particular subject has run its course and will close it in the interest of good will.
