In my humble opinion, it is far better to own a deadly weapon, be proficient, and never have to use it, than it is to need a deadly weapon at an adverse moment and not own one. It's as simple as that. The police will not protect you. They will chase the perp after the event. I will save them the hunt.

Just remember to protect your hearing at the shooting range to you can enjoy your other hobby. Serge, I may take you up on the offer. My fear of having a gun in the house has more to do with preventing a accident from happening. How do you guys lock your guns ?

David, we'll go over all that. Any day you are ready, come up to my place and I'll take you to the range and we'll go over some choices, pick a safe, shoot some guns and you will be able to make a decision. It is a very nice range.

My choice of safe for my handguns around the house. Quick access electronic lock. Can be bolted to any shelf, wall, under the bed, etc..

Stack-On | Strong Box Quick Access Safes

Being unprepared for a violent encounter scares me.

wolfhound
my dogs would die (more likely kill) protecting me and my family
I have a gun as a last resort...wish I didn't feel compelled, because in a way I feel weak having to rely on one...

the good news: if you choose your company (and habits/vices) carefully, secure your home and practice situational awareness, the chance of a violent confrontation are infintestimal...'random' crime is rare...there is usually a family or 'business' relationship
what's discomforting is it seems some people are itchin' for a confrontation...

You should take him up on the offer. Training and practice will get rid of the fear. In my house let me be the bad guy not the other guy.
