I am very glad not to have had Omerta's scare, even though it sounds like his amp is going to be ok. I am delighted to report that tech support sent me a useful reply to my email even though they are "closed" on weekends. Oppo gave me a detailed sequence of how to update the firmware, which I am doing now (waiting for the power to be off for a solid hour). Keeping my fingers crossed. I know I can always send it back but I really do not want to have to tear down the rack. It's funny, I am pretty stoic about most things, but I get real whiny about my a/v gear.

I tried again today thinking I might detect some quick fix. No go. Like before, it started normally and sounded fantastic. But this time I noticed a series of "snapping" noises coming from the speakers in rapidly increasing occurrences, then silence. Using a different source the speakers are fine. It has failed about two minutes from a cold start on four separate occasions. Seems like something is getting warm and then shorting out. Now, if I had been thinking I would have had in fail in front of the wife and then told her the amp was bad and needed replaced.

Sorry to hear of your problem, but it would really have been odd for a firmware update to fix a mechanical noise followed by no output problem. But I suspect we have all been guilty of wishful thinking when it comes to gear failure.
If your wife had caught you on the bad amp story, she may have decided you were bad and needed to be replaced.
