Default My New room

My wife and I have moved all our stuff into our new home in SC. My new room is upstairs and is ~16’X24’X10’ish... pretty close to the golden rule dimensions. However, because of the layout of the room, I find myself considering placing my speakers against one of the long walls. Here are some pics of the room. Any thoughts are appreciated.

My constraints are:
- the first short wall has the glass doors to the patio.
- the other short wall is where you enter the room so the speakers will not have acoustically similar areas PLUS I have to have our PC desk in the one corner. (See pics).
- we have an extra couch and it has found its way into my room. I prefer my two leatherette chairs but may have to compromise.

Thanks in advance folks. Hope this link works.

Default My New room

Funny to see all the boxes, you have some great gear. I am sure you were are all over these boxes when moving, versus, looking after other items and family memento’s.

Maybe sketch out the room, in addition to the photos, and list out the pro’s and con’s of placement and that should tell you what to do. If possible, Include the wife with the design, to make a happier life?

Looking forward to seeing the outcome, best!

Craig.......This is a beautiful room with so much potential. There's still plenty of work to get it all figured out and set up, but in the end this is going to be a gorgeous setup. I am happy for you. A dedicated sound room is a wonderful thing to enjoy.

Nice room!

The tray ceiling will also act as a bit of a bass diffuser due to non-parallel surfaces. The proportions are almost ideal. It's a great room.

I would try hard to get the speakers on one of the short walls so they can really project into the room.

Craig,
That's a great looking listening room! Congratulations on the move and best wishes getting everything setup just the way you like it. Enjoy the unboxing and seeing it all come together.

I've personally enjoyed many setups along the long wall of a room. In fact I often preferred that setup as I've experimented in the same room both ways. You will find that the biggest challenge will be the bass integration of a careful setup and giving the speakers enough breathing room away from the wall behind them. Also treating the walls between the speakers and behind your listening position will pay off in a big way. Expect a very wide and spacious soundstage with a nice, solid center image if you take your time with the placement of speakers and experiment with careful toe in and spacing them away from a back wall in small increments. Enjoy! Looks like a great room with a lot of potential.

Your room is likely wide enough to accommodate setting up along the long wall. While I normally prefer setting up on the short wall, there are many advocates of the long wall set-up. There's a YouTube video by a guy based on the Sumiko Masters process for setting up speakers. He uses the long wall. Here's a link
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=84Pf0ycbyBM

Usability of the room really does make a difference. Even if it is a dedicated listening room, you want to be comfortable in there. So, if the traditional short wall set up won't work, I'm sure you can get good sound anyway.

I know it wouldn't be easy, but is it possible to try both ways? Regardless, you have a nice room. With the right acoustic treatment it will sound great. Good luck and enjoy the setup.

Craig, congrats on moving into your new place and a new larger dedicated audio room. If it was me, I would try it both ways so I would know for sure how I like the sound best.

Craig, the room is big enough that I bet the long wall works just fine. Congrats!
