Thanks guys ! I’m not a big fan of “miley Cyrus” and the other go to stuff on the radio these days. I’m relatively young (I’m on my 30s) for all the good, “true” music out there that was produced in the 50s-early 90s, and wasn’t exposed to much of it. So I have to work harder to find it!

These tips are all helpful! I def try to listen to most of the music that you all post on the “what are you listening to” threads. That gives me a great start!

Thank you!

Tidal is how I listen to any new music I learn of. The source for that can be almost anywhere. My ears are always open.

Music threads on AA. I try and keep track of the page numbers and spend 30mins every week to capture all the music and add it to Roon/Tidal. If I think its a cracker I see if there is a hires copy from HDtracks etc and purchase it.

Agree with above - try to find a good, human-curated radio station (either off-air or via streaming) that plays music you like and look at the song list (most on-air stations have live web pages). Then Spotify Premium or similar to sample some albums. Then buy.

Here are some we use:
a) Radio Paradise (California, streaming only) - Modern, blues, alternative, coffee-house, etc. My go-to station for general listening. Also, KCRW (Santa Monica).

b) KMHD (Portland) - these guys know Jazz. KJAZ out of San Fransisco may be back as well (NOT KJAZZ which is 'smooth' Jazz...)

c) Alligator Radio - blues. Streaming only. They favor their own releases of course. Many other good choices.

d) WQXR (classical, New York) - Highly regarded classical station, one the oldest stations in the country/world.

I believe the key is a human-curated play list.

and, Have fun!

1. Music threads here and on the Hoffman board.

2. Amazon samples.

3. Discussions with my son and my guitar buddies.

Between Roon and browsing various high resolution sites for music as well as exploring our own music threads and suggestions from members yields more music than I can possibly listen to.

The Discover Playlist that Spotify curates every week for me is worth the $10 I spend a month by itself. So many new records I have purchased because of it.

Thems were the days, especially in a college town with an FM station where the student DJs were paid by the regional label distributors to spin new stuff of every genre.

In the 70s, starting while I was in Jr High and riding there on my bicycle with wire baskets over the rear wheel, I bought exclusively from an indy record shop across from campus. The guys knew my likes (mostly jazz and classical, plus Dylan and some folk) and when I came in, they'd pop something new on the turntable for me to hear. Since they knew I was on an extremely limited budget, they'd sometimes offer me 'for promotion only, not for resale' albums at half-price if I liked them. Deep discount to me; all profit to them; win-win.

I still remember going in one day and having them say "we've been waiting for you; you've GOT to hear this one". It was the Pat Metheny Group's first album. I couldn't believe the compositions nor the clarity of sound offered by ECM. I didn't leave the store until we had listened to both sides. They said they knew I'd like it and had convinced the regional ECM rep to leave two demo's so they could pass one along to 'an influential local music critic' or some such BS.

In the early 90's, there was a guy at a nearby Best Buy (of all places) that had one-third of their store footprint dedicated to CDs, who knew all the best new classical and jazz CD releases.

To the OP's question -- today, I mostly depend on 'new and soon-to-be-released' searches at Amazon and Presto Classical to see what's coming or just out, then reviews at Amazon, Grammophone and DownBeat.
