Perhaps a dumb question but.
Are there adapters that can be placed on a reel to reel machine that could change the size of a two inch reel to reel tape machine so that it can play one inch tapes and or half inch tapes and or quarter inch tapes?
Or in other words, could my Tascam ATR 80 two inch Studio Mastering Reel to Reel tape machine be modified to play one inch tape and or half inch tape or quarter inch tape with the use of some type of circular adapter device?

The problem is not just the reels, it is the whole tape path - tape guides, cpastan, pinch roller and - ESPECIALLY - tape heads.
Even if you got it to work - it would not sound good enough to be worth the effort. Also - tape heads are typically optimized for a particular width of tape. Especially when you think about how close the tracks are on 1/4" tape (or on 1/8" cassette tape), you realize the design efforts that went into the tape heads. thanks, Jim |
