Just bought An Oppo BDP-83
After much flip-flopping and reading so many positive reviews, I said what the hell and bought the new Oppo BDP-83. Yes, I do live on the razors edge. It was just delivered yesterday.
This is the first Oppo product I've ever owned. I don't have much 83 time under my belt yet. But I will say this, it's pretty damn fast. It is more robust than I had thought. I was pleasantly surprised. However, it's nowhere near the build quality of the 09. Which is built like a tank. Now I'm strictly bitstreaming from the 83. I use my MCD500 for SACD playback. So all I really need from the Oppo is a transport. The beefy analog section of the 09 for me, is going unused.

Good choice. From what I've read online, this is an awesome player for the price. When McIntosh blu-ray player comes out, you can just replace this one!

Congratulations Waboman! The Oppo is a terrific player, especially for a universal player and at it's price point

Good point Tommy.
I haven't had much time with the 83 yet. But looks like I might be putting my 09 up for sale.

From using it briefly last night, it seems to be quite the player.

I received my BDP-83 on Wednesday, after having gotten the email saying I'd come to the top of the waiting list the week before. So far I'm very happy. This is my first blu ray player, replacing a Denon 3910. The Oppo seems about as good as the Denon on DVD, but can also handle blu ray. I especially like the fact that the Oppo can decode all the blu ray audio formats, since my video system processor is an older Rotel which predates blu ray, but has a 5.1 analog input.

Wabo,
I'm afraid I know the answer to this one, but does the Oppo send the digital output from BlueRay out so I can use the digital input on my MDA1000 for decoding the 24-bit/96 Khz stereo signal in the BlueRay (e.g. from Neil Young's Blue Ray archives. The specs from Oppo say:
But I doubt that, for legal reasons, the high-res digital stereo signal would be allowed to "leave the box". Thanks, Alberto |

My Oppo has digital output options for LPCM up to 192KHz, Bitstream, and even DSD for SACD. I haven't used any of these, since I use the Oppo's analog audio outs because my 10 year old processor doesn't accept digital signals above 48KHz, but all those digital output options are on the set up screen

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking on this one. Of course, you can't send the lossless codecs over anything but HDMI, but if you bitsream over optical/coax, you do get the lossy core tracks. Is that what you meant, or am I missing your point entirely? Not sure how helpful that was. If I'm just not getting the questions, let me know and I'll try again! Jeff.
