And I agree with everything you post here but will add...........

As noted by crwilli, in order to be able to rip SACDs you need players that meet the following conditions: "a player that uses the MediaTek MT8560 or MT8580 chipsets. “like Oppo 103/105, Cambridge Audio 752bd/cxu, Pioneer bdp-lx58/88 ) or MT8560 (like Pioneer BDP-160, 170 and BDP-80FD”.
There are, also, several Sony players that are capable of ripping SACDs but, imho, it is not done so easily as with the others.

I own an Oppo 105 and used it to rip all my SACD discs.

The Sony HAP-Z1ES CAN convert FLAC files, WAV files, etc. to DSD64 for listening. It does so on-the-fly but you cannot save the DSD file.

A music player like HQPlayer can also take any type of lower resolution file, convert it to DSD, and upsample it up to 512DSD. This is also done on-the-fly but it does require lots of computer power. I use HQPlayer and I can now listen to ALL my CDs (stored in FLAC) in 512DSD.

Formerly YB-2 asked: "...am wondering if one must rip CDs into DSD file format to play them back as DSD files or can one rip in FLAC files and play back as DSD?". You cannot rip a CD into DSD. But you can rip a CD, save the file as FLAC/WAV/AIFF/Etc and convert that file to DSD during playback as noted above.
Does the Oppo 105D have the same chipset?

An OPPO 105D has been reported to have the capability to rip SACDs.

My Oppo is the 105D. I used the 105D to rip my SACDs. It works.

Oppo 103 and 105 as well as their "D" variants are capable of SACD ripping.

Good info. More grist for the mental mill. Thanks.

Thanks for all the info so far, learning alot!

Friends SACD player is the McIntosh MCD1100.

Are there any stand-alone computer disc players that will allow export of SACDs to a DSD or to I need to find an old PS3?

I'm not aware of one, but here's info on the chipset you need. If you find one, let us know.

If you want to learn about archiving SACDs, go to computer audiophile dot com and find the thread titled ‘SACD Ripping using an Oppo or Pioneer? Yes, it's true!’ There is 100 plus pages of posts. Everything you want to know - that is known about the process - is there.

But again, you cannot take the digital output of an SACD player and connect it to another DAC to play the DSD directly off the disc unless there is a proprietary cable/link between the two units of the same manufacturer.
