Let me say I was not expecting such a improvement in detail , sound stage, yet while still maintaining musicality. Sometimes with a lot of detail there is sacrifice in warmth and vice versa but Iím loving what I hear and what I am hearing is bringing nuances I never noticed before , this is a excellent dac. What is also amazing is that the performance of this dac is shocking. Instead of having a fixed dac on a chip , this dac uses fpga -field programable gate array hardware which allows the dac to be customized with software which ps audio does for free atleast once a year. How great is that a dac that stays up on the latest technology! You can install a network card which gives you full MQA , something not available 5 years ago when the dac first was introduced. Snow mass just came out a few months ago. Another cool thing about this dac is it is native DSD , hence the direct stream used in the name. You can read more about it , I highly recommend this DAC. Listening to vocals of Nora Jones, Stevie Nicks for example playing Redbook sounds like a SACD. I am just amazed at the sound stage, I finally get what Danís means in his reviews when he say more air between the instruments as I never experienced it in my system. My source took a step backward but Iím not noticing it, itís a 2012 Mac mini running Roon as a core streaming tidal and playing music from the hd I have to say tidal sounds better. I will report back after I listen to qobuz. I played some Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, just fabulous. Like I said this dac is winner. Thanks Lars!
Received my new PS Audio DSD last week. Biggest improvement for us in our system is the reduction in digital haze, especially around the voices. Redbook albums we had been avoiding are now tolerable and even sound good to listen to.

Enjoy!

That was one of the aspects that sold me on the Directstream DAC in the first place... I had never heard my MP3s sound that tangible and convincingly real! It was such an obvious improvement over my previous gear, and I wasnít able to find anything better at the local stores.

Bridge II Ordered today

I have been listening to the DS DAC now for a little over a month and have been very happy. I listen now mostly to tidal so the next thing for me to day was order a Bridge II to get the full unfold of MQA as well as the improvement in sound which is supposed to sound better than via USB. The downside I am told as I understand is the bridge may or may not play DSD 128 (I might be wrong) however I can always play those files via the USB input if needed.

Bridge does dsd64. I donít have the bridge and donít stream but I did purchase a little gizmo called a matrix which really does a great job converting usb to I2s.
Big thread under tweaks and accessories in the ps Audio forum.

I read that the bridge does a internal I2s connection. I have usb for dsd128.

The Bridge II sounds so good that for the odd higher res DXD and DSD2x, I don't even bother.

You could probably get as good results with a custom low noise CAPS (computer audiophile server with a good USB cable and linear power supplies) but the idea of maintaining a PC just for the few higher res audio (>24/192 and DSD1x) didn't seem worth the hassle just to hear the higher res.

So very true.
