I used Cardas GR for a long time and switched to Transparent Reference. The difference was night & day. The TA was so much better.

The key issues with long cables is output impedance of the preamplifier and cable capacitance. Unhappily only a few manufacturers list the capacitance per meter of their cables. I have measured a few and found that in general Transparent Audio, Cardas and Kimber have low capacity - the Cardas Golden Reference was exemplary at around 50 pF per meter. .
Most preamplifiers have a very low output impedance and will easily drive anything with reasonable length. The GAT is one of them. |

Not so much the CT5. I run a short length of Nordost Tyr. Capacitance is 25 pF per foot, which I believe is low, but I only run a metre.
Based on capacitance alone I would swap my Tyr and Valhalla but I put my best cable first. It certainly sounded different when I swapped them last year. Not sure how things might be different since I changed from ca200 to LP 70s. I don't play around with setup often as don't like to disturb things. Its a pain and that's when amps and gear play up. |
