Default Recent Rifle - Savage F/TR 308

Savage Arms Firearms > 12 F/TR

Savage Arms Model 12 F/TR -- competition style .308 for benchrest or prone shooting. 30" barrel.

It wears a Nightforce 12-42 Precision Benchrest target scope. The scope is mounted to the rifle using Nightforce rings and a Nightforce rail mount.

I love this rifle. Sub-moa with quality ammunition (blackhills 175g). Range time with this thing is an absolute blast.

Hardly - I'm an animal lover and don't even hunt birds. Exclusively paper targets and clays for me. The shit on the floor is just the 'character' of the unfinished basement floor in our 1930's home. Finishing such a basement makes no sense, so it serves as storage for things like holiday decorations and firearms.

Rock.......I hear you. Don't think I'd want to be looking at the business end of any .308.

Nice rifle. Are the actions bedded on these from the factory? Where do you shoot?

F/TR is a great class. Congrats and keep 'em in the 10-ring.

One of our club members is having a problem with his neck and has been told the risks are too high to continue shooting. He is selling an unfired Eliseo with a Barnard action/trigger and 32" Bartlein barrel F/TR and a second unfired Barnard with a 26" heavy Bartlein barrel in a Mastin stock for F/Open, if anyone is interested. Also has a new Tubb 2000 match-rifle in 6XC with Warner/Tubb/Anschutz sights and a new Whitley AR based match-rifle with a Kreiger barrel in 6mmTurbo40. I gave serious consideration to the Eliseo/Barnard/Barlein F/TR rifle, but have decided to stick with my White Oak .223R. The .223 doubles as both an F/TR and XTC rifle. With the Whitley one would be forced into F/Open.

Formerly YB-2:

Thanks! Only shooting at local clubs for now. No formal competitions yet, but I'd like to try some of that soon. This is my first rifle setup that would be appropriate for such a thing, and I'm excited to give it a whirl.

The Eliseo/Barnard/Barlein would probably be a great shooter, but my next rifle will be a .223 for the reason you mentioned. My Ruger SR-556 is a great gun for three-gun competitions and the like, but isn't really appropriate for target shooting at distance. How do you like the White Oak? Do you have one of the competition uppers?

I shoot a WO Precision upper with a Kreiger 1-in-8" barrel in service rifle and a flat-top WOA upper with 26" Kreiger in match-rifle and F/TR. Our club has the only 600yd range in NJ and I keep thinking that I want a 6mm or 6.5mm for same to cheat the wind. But, when it comes down to actually purchasing one, can't justify all the extra effort/expense in doing so. The interesting thing is that the service rifle likes 80gr SMKs at 600yd and the longer barrel prefers Hornady's 80gr bullets. Horses for courses. I reload with Win brass, RE15 powder and Rem 7.5 primers. For F/TR I use either a Leupold VX-3 6.5-20X 40mm EFR or 25X-40mm fixed scope. Anything stronger is not all that useful due to the mirage we shoot through. Been out doing some practice offhand at 200yd and was surpised at how much mirage there was through the spotting scope in 50 degree weather on a sunny day.
