I've just spent over 3 weeks sending out the local law enforcement to keep a drone out of my fenced in back yard. What I learned. The eye cannot commit a trespass, even if the camera on the drone is looking in your second story windows. The Investigator recommended I shoot it down. Clearly where I live that would be a very unsafe thing to do. After contacting a lawyer he informed me by no means do that, it's against the law to shoot a gun in my town period, and I would be responsible for the damage to the drone. Therefore my local law enforcement does not even understand my rights when it comes to these drones. Basically when it comes to drones I have no right at this time. Thanks to some strategically placed video cameras, and continued calls, and emails to the town hall the drone pilot from the next neighborhood has stopped entering my fenced in backyard air space. After providing the address of where the drone pilot lives, and video proof the local law enforcement made a visit to the home. I guess to prove a point the drone pilot flies over my home at about 200ft and hovers for minutes.
This entire situation has affected the family negatively. I now have revengeful thought in my head each time I see the drone. If we are in the back yard having a barbecue, we just pack it up and move it inside. Now I HATE drones! Last edited by RoadDawgWest; 08-15-2015 at 12:07 PM. |

Don.......I am with you on the invasion of privacy that drones are capable of committing, seemingly unregulated. The FCC is slowly developing rules that will apply to recreational drone users and already have some rules in place. Basically, a drone cannot be flown higher than 400 feet in any areas controlled by the FAA for flight patterns. A recreational drone pilot cannot lose sight of his drone by his own natural eyes. Some drone pilots are now beginning to fly drones with cameras that transmit real time live video back to a receiver/display mounted on the drone controller. This is called FPV (first-person viewing) flight. This is regulated by requiring the FPV drone pilot to possess a valid FCC Ham Operator's License due to the frequencies the video transmitters operate on. The FCC is considering making it illegal for FPV flight for recreation drone use because it allows the drone to be operated beyond the operators natural eye sight, one of the requirements for recreational drone flight. If the drone operator who is antagonizing you is flying his drone FPV, he had better possess a valid Ham Operator's License or he is in violation of the law.
The FCC needs to step up their process of developing enforceable rules that protect the general public from invasion of privacy and public nuisance. Both of these problems are happening simultaneously when a drone is hovering over your property and video recording or first-person viewing you and your private property. This should not be allowed. Something to consider would be a radio frequency jammer to interrupt control and cause a drone to crash. I am surprised someone hasn't already come up with such a device. Since it is illegal to shoot them from the sky, a jammer seems like a logical alternative. Make your particular area a no-fly zone where drones loose control and crash. Makes sense to me.

Don.......Well what do you know, someone has thought of a drone jammer.

There is a much easier way to build a drone jammer. Microwave ovens run on 2.4 Ghz and put out a LOT OF POWER. So you can take a microwave apart and build a nice jammer for about $30 or so. There are some caveats here, you have to construct the jammer so you are not exposed to the 1 kV high voltage power supply for the magnetron, and you have to make sure you always use it outside and don't point it at anyone. http://youtu.be/0l80oCsjYy4 This video covers the basics. A better horn antenna will extend the range and effectivity.

Ever since the drone was 2 feet outside my second story bedroom windows, I have been thinking about the jammer idea a couple of times over the past few weeks. I'm by no means an expert, but as I thought about it, I came to the conclusion that it might also be against the law to interrupt communication frequency bands that are used by these drones or other remote controlled devices. The last thing I need is to interrupt someones home phone, or garage door opener, and there would be an emergency. Even if it does not interfere with other frequency bands it still might be against the law to interrupt those frequencies, anyway. I looked into trespassing laws, and where I live the law is flawed since it does not cover the vertical space above the property lines. I've looked into the noise ordinance. Nothing covers drones yet. What I'm trying to determine now is why these drones are not considered the same as a remote controlled airplane or helicopter. Just 2 miles down the road we have a hill where people meet to fly their remote controlled planes. Why these drones are not considered the same has me scratching my head. |

be very careful about this. when you build the jammer, you have to worry about coverage. 100, 200, or 300 meters. you will be possibly cutting someone's phone off
