Hi, For stereo, I let de RELs kick in at around 35 Hz. We started testing lower, because my Vivids do have useful output down to 20 Hz, but this gave the best results so far (I might play around a bit more in the future but I'm already very happy). I thought it would be subtle, but it isn't. The difference is not only very audible, you can also feel it. For surround, I let my processor cross over at 40 Hz for the fronts, and 60 Hz for the centre and rears. 40 Hz is the lowest setting in my Marantz. I still wonder what took me so long to add the subs, because also here, it makes a huge difference. Those lowest 5-10 Hz really are important. Overall, those 8K were one of my better audio investments! Hope this helps, Bart

My Aidas sound pretty good with support from my 4 fathoms.
I wouldn’t be without them.

Earlier this summer, I added a Rythmik Audio sub to my setup. I didn't know what I was missing! It took some time to get it properly set up but what a difference it has made. Unfortunately, I don't have the space for a second one.

Good information here. The ability to even out room modes is a strong argument.

Occasionally I like to listen to organ music. Very few full range speakers can produce the weight of the organ realistically.

I have ML CLS1s.
For years I thought about getting a sub, but hesitated believing the extra crossover circuitry and wiring would impede the purity, transparency, and resolution. Finally (years ago), I bought a ML Depth sub. There was no loss of purity, transparency, and resolution. And the total system sound gained in terms of space, ambience, low-end extension, and smoothness. |

As to sub integration you can get either abysmal results or truly spectacular results. It all depends on system synergy and how well you've managed to integrate them. In my small room I ran 2 SVS SB1000 subs behind my Magnepan 1.7's with terrific results. No way you could ever tell I had subs running.

What a fun and timely subject.
I’m also an occasional organ pipes listener, attempting to recreate the total immersion I felt hearing the Passau Cathedral organ, largest pipe organ in Europe. I tried for years to successfully integrate multiple subs into 2 channel listening. Never got it right. I was never satisfied, always preferring 2 channel to 2 channel & subs. I finally brought in an expert for a system calibration. I asked him to set me up with both full range and full range with subs. He said he ht bother, once you hear it with the subs you will always want them. He was right. My answer to the question posed is that subs properly integrated into my system yielded true full range sound. I can’t hear where the L/R’s stop and my 4 subs begin. It’s simply a field of f full range sound. On standup bass it’s still sweet. Detailed. In proper balance. Then, when Han’s hits his low notes or that pipe organ is looking to shake your home’s foundation, boom, it’s all there too! |
