After doing some acoustic treatment and better speaker placement, now my DG-58 performs pretty well on both smooth and flat VC.

I am still working on improvement of my system. My final target is "VC off" all the time.

Good to know: if you put the DG-58 in a easier situation, it performs better indeed!

Sadly that is not always possible: for example the room modals in the bass region require very big and very precisely tuned passive treatment to be minimally effective. That is expensive and impractical, even in a dedicated room.

Right now, after many years of passively improving my room and many iterations of speakers tried, I still have that 40Hz modal, that requires EQ to remove.

After last passive panels and speakers upgrade, I now use my DG-58 only for that specific task, but I just received a Rives Audio PARC, and I'll see if that would also work for my problem.

Little update, I just tried the PARC in my system, and while it works well regarding the bass EQ, produces a slight hum that I suspect comes from filter capacitors.
So for now the DG-58 stays, since it is absolutely silent and transparent, two parameters I found important.

I'll change the capacitors and recheck the PARC in the future.

Quick question for DG58 owners, someone has a PDF with the operating manual in English? I cannot find mine after moving to new house... Thank you.

Accuphase does not make manuals in PDF format.

About the DG-58, I am wondering how it would be used in a mixed (i.e., not all-Accuphase) system with more than one digital source. It looks to have only one SPDIF coax input. So one would have to use the optical for another source? Then, if I'm not mistaken, it has a DAC, but no volume control, which means a separate preamp would be necessary. Is all that right?

1) digital inputs and outputs: 1x SPDIF coax, 1x SPDIF optical, 1x HS-Link (Accuphase specific)
2) DAC yes, but no volume control
3) analog inputs and outputs: XLR and Cinch; allows insertion into a tape loop or between preamp and poweramp with the built in ADC/DAC
4) option: switching multiple digital inputs with a digital detangler from z-sys.com, if you can find one; though the company might be out of business

Thanks, Martin. That gives me a clearer picture.

As it happens, I've one of those Z-Sys units sitting in my closet now.

I'm using a Classé CP-800, but I'm always interested in DSP units that might make an improvement without overly complicating my system or breaking the bank. I think DSP is an important direction for audio, and we are close to the time when the slight hardening that often occurs with DSP will go away.

They are not directly comparable to the Accuphase, but it's interesting to see several DSP preamps newly emerged: the Anthem STR, DSPeaker X4, and miniDSP SHD series. And Classé's update is (we hope) available next year. It is very difficult to compare these units at home or find anyone who has, though I hope to try at least 2 or 3 of them at some point.

Good to hear. My z8.8 (4.2.2) starts to become too small for my system, so I'm looking for a second one or a larger one.

One unit, which IMHO merits a closer look is the French Trinnov ST-2 HIFI or its brother ST-2 Pro (trinnov.com). At half the price of a DG-58 the Trinnov units offer a unique four microphone measurement system, which allows a 3D analysis of the listening environment, and they feature an awesome bunch of correction possibilities. The Trinnovs run on Intel dual core processors. Trinnov claims they would need at least half a dozen DSPs to do the same job.

Martin

currently using a DG-58 in an all Accuphase system, well, except for a bunch of pro gear
