Have you tried leaving the ports open on the mains and crossover at 80Hz? Also, what slope is the crossover frequency set at? One of my problems with subs (and I admit that I don't like them) is that often the main speakers have altered sound characteristics when the subs are added. Plugging the ports sounds like a bad idea to me because it would alter the sound of the mains. The mains are the most important part of any system and having carefully selected them, the last thing that should be done is to compromise them. Another factor is in the crossovers. All else equal, the crossover change is most pronounced as the slope gets steeper. So a first order (i.e. 6 db/octave) filter would be expected to have less audible impact than a second order (12 db/octave) which in turn would have less audible impact than a third order (18 db/octave) and so on. There is a lot to consider and getting it all dialed in is not easy.

Default New JL f112 sub shutting off, tone sweep only lasts 5-6 seconds

Hi there gang, I just joined this forum in hopes of having a JL f112 sub question answered. I have also emailed Barry but I know he is a busy cat and I am in the queue with JL Support. I am having issues with a new f112 that I just received a few days ago:

I just received a beautiful and brand new JL Audio f112 subwoofer and set it up this weekend. It hasn't overwhelmed me yet with its prowess straight out of the box. Last night while rocking out to music in a pretty loud setting I noticed twice that the f112 was in sleep mode producing no audio output. The second time I noticed it I just walked over and touched the cabinet very lightly and boom - audio again.

Then I decide to run the Demo Tone Sweep gizmo that it comes with because I hadn't tried it yet. Manual clearly states the tone sweep should run for "20 seconds with a multitude of frequencies. When I run it I get maybe 5-6 seconds" of tone sweep and then it abruptly stops. I tried it like 15 times to no avail. I powered it off and unplugged it from the power for the entire night and made one more attempt this morning before heading out to work. Still the same.

Anybody had issues similar to this with a JLf112 or 113? Does your demo tone sweep run for 20 seconds or just the ~5-6 seconds that I get? Mine runs for ~5-6 seconds and then just abruptly stops. You can tell that it stops right in the middle of the second tone sweep based upon how the first one ‘sounded/ felt’. The first sweep starts, ramps up, and then finishes. The second tone sweep starts, begins to ramp up, and then abruptly stops. End of DEMO.

Are there any other secret diagnostics by pushing a series of the front button that I can run on it to further tell me if I am indeed having issues? I haven’t run the microphone calibration yet. Maybe that will do something out of the ordinary as well as from what I have read it is supposed to take a few minutes to run, and if it doesn’t or abruptly stops then I know I have an issue.

Thanks so much in advance - Dana

Dana: Please share if this is part of a home theater or a 2 channel system and what you are using for a preamp or home theater receiver. If a home theater receiver and you run the microphone set up, what is the db level of the sub and the mains? Also what is the volume level on the sub? Jim

Dana,
I recall from memory that when running the ARO, the volume of the sub needs to be at a minimum level. If the test is stopping after 5-6 seconds, you probably need to raise the volume. The manual explains it. Try that and I hope it works for you.

I am going by memory of a few years ago but if I recall correctly, I found to use the ARO I had to turn up the sub volume to the point that it was able to get a reading but no more. I then had to turn down the sub to try to get as close to 0 db for the sub as I could in the preamp-processor. It took a few trials. If I got a -12db for the sub (sub volume way, way too high) then there is no signal to the sub. Who has better recall then me?

I just tried Demo on my sub that I use for LFE and redirected bass in my HT. It ran for for about 6 seconds. I am sure my sub is working perfectly.

I think your Demo mode is working correctly. I think the manual is mistaken when it says 20 seconds.

That still does not explain why your sub went to sleep with a signal present. Even more perplexing to me is how it came to life from just touching it.
