I'm always astonished to read, that people did not hear any differences between various Accuphase preamps and even claim they were indistinguishable.

Presumably this may have something to do with some limiting elements within the rest of the chain (sources, power amps, speakers, cables, room acoustics and how you deal with it).

The change from the famous C-3800 to the current C-3850 in my system was immediately audible. But this seemingly simple change also required new measurements and settings in my DG-58!
Without these new measurements and settings, the potential of the C-3850 could not be fully unleashed and both preamps sounded much closer together.

The bottom line is:
The setup of the entire system is crucial! One unsuitable cable and your "test" becomes meaningless.

Well, Martin, if there are such big differences between each generation, then one can infer that just 4 or 5 generations ago Accuphase gear would have sound almost broken

Also, Accuphase in his literature for gear (both the brochures and the "technical" papers) never mentions other audible characteristic other than noise: http://www.accuphase.com/technical_i...nformation.pdf (the other small changes are mainly mechanical and ergonomic ones). Until early '90s they also included THD graph, but they became so perfect to almost be irrelevant, compared to the much bigger distorsions room and speakers give to the sound.

So I never fully understood how "different" the sound could be from the wonderful C-3800 to the even more wonderful C-3850, other than a tiny bit lower noise floor (the % seems big, but is is from astonishing small to incredible small ).
I don't think the presentation, for example a "more forward midrange" or something like that could change. If it were, then either the original or the newer model would be really flawed and not the "precision preamplifier" it is. And clearly is not the case.

Regarding room, speakers, etc. I fully agree: a 10cm changement of the speakers position probably would have a bigger impact on sound

But I am not here to say there are no differences. I simply don't ear them, even in direct fast comparison (both with speakers and with headphones). What I think I can say for sure is that they are surely not "big"

Evening to all members.
I joined this forum as I found it the most informative on Accuphase gear. I'm new to Accuphase 'club' which I moved to from Marantz stable. I live in UK, where Accuphase is a rarity, I managed to aquire P-450 and DP-65V, now I'm searching for preamplifier from similar era. It is almost impossible to find one around here although I've managed to locate one - DC-300. Currently my sources (beside DP-65V) are Bluesound Node 2 / Chord DAC and Pro ject turntable / Phono Box RS connected to ML preamp. My $1000000 question is : is it still good idea to use DC-300 as a preamp bearing in mind its 24/96 limitations? I play hi res files up to 24/192 hence I don't know if I should get DC-300 or wait for analogue preamp to pop up around here hopefully some time soon...

A good match to your P-450 would be a C-265 analog pre. (You might also go for any newer analog preamp.)
I would not recommend one of the the digital preamps DC-300 / DC-330. With the advent of Accuphase's AAVA volume control in 2002 (C-2800), Accuphase completely abandoned the digital preamps.

Thank you for warm welcome and first advise. C-265 is what I would like to purchase as it was the right choice for P-450 at the time. As today I got new speakers :-) I'm not in a hurry for the preamp anymore. Nevertheless, if I find C-265 either in UK or EU some time soon, I will probably get it :-)

I didn't have to wait long... :-) someone listed C-2000 on ebay, I'm picking it up next week. :-)
