Good article. One thing's for sure. If you want to take all the joy out of listing to music, just fire up that double blind test rig and start listening for differences. Total buzzkill.

Serge
I'll take loudness mastered over having to listen to the SOS from the 70's and 80's. If it wasn't for new music I dump this hobby overnight.

My passion goes a bit further back than '70s since I love Jazz and Blues and I listen to some of my own native language performers. Let me tell you Jim, I can never get enough of it, no matter how many times I listen to it. We make it a point to have a wine and cheese night at least once a week with my wife simply listening to our favorite Jazz.

Not something I could do with the often meaningless, pointless, uninspiring modern music and lyrics. Don't even get me started on that whole RAP and peepsqueek POP of the plastic, artificial, spoiled and uncultured generation, I don't understand it and never will. Yes, there is some well recorded modern music, yes, some of the singing divas have great voices but for the most part, it all lacks "substance".

I'm lucky that my main music interest is classical music which features a huge repertoire and a constant release of new recording with modern interpretative takes on the likes of Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, Bach, etc. The recordings (especially the hi-rez as highlighted in the paper) are usually outstanding to magnificent. It would be frustrating for me to just listen to pop / rock music from the past decade.

Yes, classical is fantastic. I wish I could get into it more. Maybe it’s still not too late.

Serge, you're getting old!

(I wouldn't dare saying that if you were older than me)

Serge
For me Jazz is as bad a Rap. "Recorded" Classical I can take in small doses and prefer to get that fix via our season subscription.

To each his own and enjoy what keeps us interested.
