Default Docmd2010's 2 channel room construction

Hey everyone. I'm embarking on construction of my home, which will be fully custom.

I'm designing a 2 channel room, which according to the golden ratios, and others' advice on the forum will be around 17 x 23 x 10. It will be in a finished basement. Theater will be in another part of the house.

The room will have a small closet connected by a sealed door for my physical media.

I am going to research this as much as possible. Construction won't be starting for 4-5 months, and in the meanwhile, I'll plan this room out to the T.

I'll post pictures and construction plans as I get them.

If you all have any ideas or advise regarding construction, power, please feel free to dish it out!

Aditya... glad you had a chance to visit me in Cape Cod. I’m sure you got a few good ideas on how I executed a few of my rooms.

Building can be an emotional roller coaster, take it in stride, plan the space even if needs to be finished later - better now then do the 3 to 1 upgrade if that makes sense to you and watch your budget, these things can out of control like audio

Natural light, safety, doors, windows plumbing, HVAC etc

Good luck with your project Aditya. Leave no stone unturned and give it much thought, research and don't cut corners and oh yeah, Do sweat the small stuff. It will all be so worth it in the end if you put in the effort.

Ok guys it's been a while since I updated this thread. All plans for my two channel room have been completed. I spent the last 5 months planning out this room. It was a lot of work. I talked to many people who are extremely knowledgeable in this field and came up with a plan on how to do this build. We are about 3 months away from construction starting. I still haven't signed a contract yet so if you have any input on stuff, let me know!

The room is going to be in a concrete poured basement. It will be in a corner of a basement, with no windows. The interior of the room will be 17 foot wide x 23 foot deep by 9 foot 9 inches tall.

Room construction will be room in a room. The two walls that don't back up to concrete will have an outer 2 x 6 wall with a 2 inch air gap in between. The concrete walls on the other two will serve as the outer wall.

I have told the builder that I don't want any ceiling drops in the room. HVAC system will be designed with larger ductwork with 4 supply vents and 1 return. This minimizes air noise. Credit goes to Ivan on this tip!

All water/sewer pipes will be wrapped with quietbatt.

The wall will be constructed as follows going from outside in:

3/8 inch sheetrock
2 x 6 row of studs (or concrete wall depending on where)
2 inch air gap
2 x 6 row of studs 16 inch OC. Three rows of 2 x 4 horizontal bracing between each studs at 3', 6' and 9'.
1/2 inch plywood, screwed in to the studs and wood bracing.
Layer of green glue
3/8 inch sheetrock
Layer of green glue
3/8 inch sheetrock
layer of green glue
3/8 inch sheetrock

All layers of drywall will be in screwed in (not nailed).

Ceiling:
1/2 inch plywood, then 3 layers of drywall with green glue in between (same as walls)

Walls will have fiberglass insulation in between.

Flooring will be carpet with DynaPad foam pad underneath.

Power: Separate Subpanel with 100Amp service. 8 dedicated 20 AMP circuits, each wired with 10/2 romex, all on same phase. All outlets will wrapped with green putty to insulate them.

Door will be an airtight, sealed door to the rest of the basement.

I'll have my own storage closet connected to my room to store physical media as well.

I'm still deciding on what I should do for can lights. Any suggestions on this room?.

Here is a picture of my audio room. You can see where there will be double walls.

I think such a "stiff" room will have really big bass problems. I haven't run any numbers, but the bass nodes that build up will be very hard to deal with partially due to the rooms stiffness.

Default Docmd2010's 2 channel room construction

This looks like it will be a wonderful sanctuary for serious listening, it will be fun to see your progress.

One suggestion, I would seriously consider another door, in the corner to the children’s play area, as an alternate fire exit. If you have a fire somewhere outside your only door, the room will be a death trap.

Tony, yah I thought about that. I'm saving the corners of the room and walls close to corners for room treatments. I'll have to give it some thought though.
