Elberoth, thanks for the clear answers. I was not sure whether you have received my pm message on Audiogon.

Anatta, thanks for the links they are very useful (clear and to the point).

Romulus, please report back and share your impressions once you have the DP-800/DC-801 combo.

Imprezap2, indeed I do not plan to invest into a computer audio solution. You remembered well. While it is always good to have options (in this case the usb connection), I actually like to play cd/sacd discs. The reason is that whenever I have the possibility to make playlists, I tend to listen to only a few songs from an album and as such never remember albums name, years of release, etc.. Not only I feel I miss a lot of good songs from many artists, but I also find myself very often talking about "track 3 from the blue album”.

w3ua, I am aware that Accuphase DACs work very well when connected directly to the power amp. One only needs a transparent enough amp. (I have connected my DP-600 sacd player to my A-65 power amp and also to my previous A-45 amp. The DP-600 & A-65 sounded better than the A-45 & C-2410 & DP-600 combo, and quite close to my "full" combo A-65 & C-2810 & DP-600. On the other hand, connecting the DP-600 directly to the A-45 has yielded less good results.)

Masterlu, what has happened with the thread about the DP-720 player? I am not able to find it anymore.

Coming back to my original dilemma, i.e. which player to buy, it seems that eventually I will buy a DP-800/DC-801 combo. But not just yet. A few days ago I have made a down payment for a C-3800 pre-amplifier, and if I will go through with it (read further) I will not be able to afford also a DP-720.

My dealer has offered me a very good deal for a new (sealed) C-3800 pre, and was also willing to take back my C-2810 pre (which I bought from him as an ex-demo model) for a full refund. While I do not want to start any false rumours, this makes me wondering whether Accuphase is about to replace the C-3800 pre which is 4 - 4.5 years old now. I wasn’t sad to see the A-70 being released 7-8 months after I bought an A-65, but I will probably not be very happy to see the C-3800 being updated and cheaper at the same time. Anyone has any info about a replacement for the C-3800?

Nothing even on the radar screen.

Setup is finally completed, the 2810 has received the company of the digital duo 800 and 801 and the A70 as amplifier.

Amplifier class A is presenting the music in a very nice way, best of both worlds (tube and solid state), every aspect of it is nice, highs, lows and specially mids. Music flows out of the speakers (magico V3). Never in an aggressive way, difficult to describe, but the a70 definitely is the stereo version of the A200 mono's.

As for the source. The past years I encountered a certain digital fatigue and basically only enjoyed vinyl playback for intense listening. This occurred especially with all recent dacs with sabre chips. As I mentioned earlier i compared the latest combo with the previous generation and decided to opt for the previous generation (also for price reasons).

The newer generation has more impact and is made to impress. Extremely good of course but i have questions in the long run. I feel more confident with the sound of the 800/801.

I definitely need to upgrade my collection of sacd's. The ones i have sound amazing with the transport. Too bad sacd is not really popular and a limited amount of titles appears. Second hand rare sacd's are as expensive as rare vinyl ! If you have suggestions where to buy sacd, don't hesitate

My mac mini goes to the dac through the halide bridge. This is a relatively cheap usb to spdif convertor and this one does the job in a simple way (limited to 24/96, matches dac coax input perfectly).

Overall, very happy with the sound and the looks !

Hi Romulus,

Great set up you have there, I also love the Magico V3 / Accuphase class A combination.
(although only an integrated)
Music really flows and I really like the soundstage the Accuphase gear can throw.
(now listening to a new cd from Nathalie Merchant, fabulous recording again)

I think I didn't. Pls post it again.

RE the 3800, I think it is still a bit too early now. They tend to replace their top of the range components every 6 years or so. There is simply not enough progress to warrant faster model changes. Anyway - congrats on the new pre. It looks and sounds fabulous !

Thank you imprezap2
I guess we have the same taste
I see you are from the Netherlands, perhaps we should listen to each others setup one day. I live in Belgium, north of Brussels
