My late dad restored, showed and won awards for a 1907 Waltham Orient Buckboard. I seem to remember discussing the origins of ice tea at one of his many car shows. How I could recall such a thing at this point, I'll never know.

Amazing how the top cause of death was Pneumonia and Influenza. Antibiotics were not available at that time.

I remember about 15 years ago I had a very serious case of Pneumonia, and the doctor told me that if it had happened 50 years prior, I probably would have died.

From 1911 to now, are we really better off? Health care advances, yes. Murder rate, maybe not.

Absolutely better off - child mortality rates were still terrible by today's standards. In researching my family tree, going back to the 1620s in the U.S., I've come across a number of families where 2-4 children died within weeks of each other during one epidemic or another. Our capacity for good is closely tracked by our capacity for harm, but I believe progress will prevail.

On another medical note, I read somewhere that the medical profession only became a net benefit to mankind around the 1890s; i.e., more harm was done than good up to that point (a lot of quacks and witch doctor types back in the day!).
