The new Canon CanoScan 9000F is amazing. It scans in 1/10th the time my old UMax 1200 took to make the same document scan. Buttons on top of the scanner lid let you control scanner functions with a single push, including creating .pdf black and white, and color documents. The Email button will attach a scanned image directly to a new email message. I really like the Copy button. Lay your document in the scanner, push the Copy button, and the document prints to the LaserJet immediately without having to open any software. Color scans of photos are excellent. I haven't tried the negative film scanner function yet, but based on everything else I have seen this scanner do I expect it to perform well, too. This is a very slick color scanner.

Dan - congratulations on your new computer purchases. It's interesting to read the history of your current desktop because my situation is a very close parallel to yours. I bought my current Dell XPS P4 desktop in August 2003 and have made similar upgrades over the years (max out RAM at 3GB, add 2nd 250GB hard drive, etc.) and it has served me well other than being a bit noisy and a power hog. Just last weekend I decided to purchase a new machine - didn't want to spend a huge amount of $$ so I ended up going with this machine from ZT Systems (bought online from Costco): Product Detail Info
It should be pretty good bang for the buck and it arrives tomorrow - excited about that!  I will rebuild my old machine and hand it down to my kids for occasional use...

Jeff.......Yes, it sounds like the parallel lives of two computers.
I have been attached to my Micron, but it is old technology, and can't be brought up to current standards, so I will bid it farewell soon. I don't have any children to pass the machine to, so I will formate the hard drive, install a fresh copy of the Windows XP operating system, and donate the Micron PC, the UMax scanner, and the Minolta film scanner to a small local church to give to some deserving member. That's what I did with my old Gateway in 2003 when I bought the Micron. Congratulations on your new computer. Were both going to enjoy a nice performance boost from the 2003 era machines.

I used to have desktops and laptops, now all the computers in the house are laptops, 4 of them. I've had good luck with Toshiba laptops.
