Terry.......Thank you. That's the first video I ever uploaded to YouTube. I may do another one highlighting the Sonus faber Amati Anniversario's. I might even use a good quality external microphone.

Joe.......Thank you very much. As good as the JBL4312A's sound they are not in the same league of the Anniversario's sitting behind them. The 4312A's have that traditional JBL rock monitor sound that made JBL's speakers synonymous with live rock music, but when it comes to the finesse of modern day high resolution transducers they do show their age. None the less, the JBL 4312A's are damn good 3-way monitors.

Dan,

Very nice setup there with the JBLs. Plus, your YouTube sounds exceptionally well. You have lots of toys to keep you busy.

Kevin.......Yes, I was surprised the internal microphones on the Canon camcorder did as good a job as they did capturing the JBL 4312A's sound. I moved the JBL's out of the studio system today. I was missing the Anniversario's performance.

I listened for about three hours to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Sophie Milman, Lee Ritenour, Norah Jones among others.

I also shot a video of the JBL 4312A's playing Bonnie Raitt, "Million Miles" from her new Slipstream high-res download. I used the Canon camcorder's internal microphone and I wasn't expecting much, but surprisingly the music comes through fairly well. The JBL's sound very good with the MC2301's driving them.

Very sweet Dan, I remember hearing a pair of 4312A back in the early 80s and I was so impressed that I bought its lesser cousin, the JBL L112. I kept the L112 for a long time, replacing the woofers' foam surround twice. They still sounded very nice when I finally sold them in 2004....at almost the same price when I bought them !!! I guess there are quite some fans of the old JBL out there. Well, those were the days when JBL was still....legendary JBL.
Don't ever sell your 4312A unless you have no room to keep them. They are truly a classic.

Henry.......You are right, the JBL 4312A is a classic speaker, as are many other very fine JBL models. You should hear Pete's (Vintage Pete) JBL L220 speakers. They produce fabulous sound. JBL has a rich heritage.

I know this is an older thread and all, but darn it Dan, between you and Pete, I'm kicking myself in the butt more and more that I allowed my brother to sell his L112's to someone else instead of me buying them from him.

As Henry said, he sold his L112's for nearly as much 20 years later as he paid for them new. My brother actually got more for his as he purchased his at the PX when he was stationed in Germany.

At the time that he sold them, I had been using them for well over a year as he was using my Maggies in his system, then I acquired a mint pair of Infinity Kappa 6's. The JBL's were only sitting unused for about two months before he decided to sell them. Mistake one on my part. Second mistake on my part was selling the darn Kappa's a short while after to go back to the Maggies when my brother went with a pair of new Klipsch bookshelf speakers that he paid too much for and regretted buying.

I wonder how some of those old JBL's would compare to my NHT 2.9's. If they would be an upgrade, a downgrade or pretty much on even ground. I know they wouldn't have the low end extension the 2.9's have, but they have that punchy, tight mid and upper bass that I'm not sure the 2.9's have as I have never been able to put them to the test, living in apartments the entire time owning them.

Charles.......I have not owned a pair of the JBL L112 speakers so I can't comment on there low end range. I have heard the pair of JBL 4401's Pete uses in his office that he augments the low end with a JBL powered subwoofer. They sound very good, especially with the sub dialed in.

As for the JBL 4312A speakers, the 12" bass reflex woofers do an excellent job down to about 30Hz with plenty of slam when the volume is raised. They have no problem with acoustic bass or electric bass and provide a very satisfying bottom end range. I really like the sound of the 4312A's. I guess that's why I have owned this pair since I bought them new in 1989 and have no plans to sell them.
