I've been following your thread with interest, Scott. Big fan of Schiit and its products, which I think provide superb value for money.

Something I wish Schiit would do is make an EL34 powered tube amp. Would love to pair that with a Freya+ as a second system.

Yes......... an EL34/KT77 PP amp that can be switched between triode & UL with 6SN7 drivers and 6922 inputs would be a great addition to their line.

It’s been a good week with the Freya S. I haven’t enjoyed listening to music this much in along time.

So, I’m debating what the next move should be. I’m using the DAC in the Bluesound Node 2 at this time and its doing a fine job. The 320BEE amp is working well and sounds very good with the Freya S. Which leads me to believe adding a Gumby next makes the most sense.

What do you think?

Cheers,

Scott

So, nearly two weeks with the Freya S. At this point the It continues to amaze me and I don’t believe there should be any weird set backs with regard to break in. I keep going back and forth between adding a Gungnir or a Vidar next.

Again, the DAC in the Node 2 is doing a very good job and I really like the idea of having more power and 3db more headroom with the Vidar.

There’s a couple of good online reviews of the Vidar that come with hearty recommendations but the online end user comments are perplexing to me. I wish there was a clear consensus between owners and reviewers in regards to the Vidar as there is with Schiit’s DACs.

The specs on the Vidar look outstanding with a strong power supply and from the reviews I believe it should work very well.

If it acclimates itself to the system like the Freya S I’d be very pleased. More thoughts to come I’m sure.

Cheers,

Scott

So I’m nearly a month in with the Freya S and my enthusiasm for it has only grown. I honestly wouldn’t be posting so much about it if I didn't have the reference point of using another excellent pre-amp with the same amp I’m using now.

I will try to gather my thoughts and write a brief coherent review of it in the next few weeks. In the meantime I hope someone else will give it a try and share their thoughts.

From reading posts around the web it seems Freya S is overshadowed by its tubed sibling Freya +. I get it, Freya + looks to be a great tube pre-amp and a true value. I may pick one of those up myself. But I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the Freya S is even a better value, which is quite an accomplishment from Schiit.

There’s rumblings that Freya S may not survive “Thunderdome”; I do hope that It stays in the Schiit lineup. It would be a shame if it’s dropped.

Cheers,

Scott

I use a node 2i driving a Gumby and it is great. Gumby imparts a more organic, smoother sound with more layers and depth of soundstage vs. the Node's internal DAC. I'm using the BNC input on Gumby (RCA out of Node to BNC in on Gumby) and it sounds a bit better than using the RCA input. Which input sounds best will be cable dependent, but I have two identical true 75ohm digital cables (RCA-RCA and RCA-BNC) and the BNC sounds a bit better IMO. Also, run balanced analog out of Gumby if you can. Gumby takes quite a while to burn-in, but is a very rewarding piece of gear once it hits its stride.

Thanks for the post, Soundmig. That is very helpful, especially in regards to the Node 2i and Gumby.

I keep vacillating between getting a Gumby or Vidar (or different amp) next.

Cheers,

Scott
