What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Thanks for the welcome, Julian. I played in the concert bands and summer symphonies when I was in high school/early college (trombone/euphonium). That brings an appreciation I don't see how an outside observer could have. But my familiarity is limited to those composers and works that excite me on some kind of gut level (Tchaikovsky, for one). I'm hoping to broaden my horizons a bit by learning from the rest of you.

I saw Van Cliburn once as a teenager (he wasn't much older) when he performed in my hometown (Midland, TX). I was impressed but probably still too young to really appreciate the experience at the time.

I played in a jazz/stage band with Doc Severinson as guest performer one time. Now that guy could play. He could make that trumpet sing like nothing I've heard since.

Thanks for that John - You do seem to have an appreciation and understanding that those of us who "only play the stereo" probably don't have.

Mozart's 40th Symphony conducted by Otto Klemperer - To me, a rich and moving performance. Unfortunately, the remastered CD on the ship does not sound as good as the original LP I have on Angel. I love this music, if anyone can recommend a good remastered version or better performance, I would be grateful.

Hi, Bob. I'm not familiar with the Klemperer Mozart recording, but I really enjoy these recent interpretations of the late Mozart symphonies:

Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K550, Symphony No. 41 in C major, K551 'Jupiter', Anima Eterna, Jos van Immerseel out of Belgium on the ZigZag Territories label.



and

Mozart: Symphony No. 38 in D major, K504 'Prague', Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, K543, Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K550, Symphony No. 41 in C major, K551 'Jupiter', Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Sir Charles Mackerras on the Linn label



My favorite is the Anima Eterna/Jos van Immerseel one. The transparency of the recording is outstanding and the phrasing and accents during that interpretation are remarkable. It's like hearing these pieces for the first time.

Mackerras on Linn SACD is excellent too. Cannot go wrong with that one at all.
