Question on Tube Bias set points and sound quality ....
If a manufacturer recommends, for example, a bias set point of 35 mA, can I set it a lower (maybe 30 mA) for a slightly sweeter of softer sound with slightly longer tube life and maybe higher (40 mA) for a harder, less sweet sound at the expense of tube life?

Joe, you will never arise this kind of question with a c-j amplifier....

Hi Philippe,
I know, I know. A C-J amp is on my list. As soon as I can. I like the lights, but as I understand it, different tubes, although compatible, require different bias points and the lights are only set for one mA setting. For example EL34 vs KT77 and maybe even KT90 (I am still learning) Is my thinking correct? The light would have to be optimized for a single tube type. Joe |

Joe....You can but its always a good idea to talk with the manufacture to see how far over or under they recommend with thier gear.....Also something to keep in mind is as your voltage changes through out the day so will the bias a slight bit so you may want to check the wall voltage several times through out the day and get an average then bias with that voltage....

Or get an auto-bias amp
