TBH I wasn't very sold on 4k until I saw the Sony 1000ES. That thing is spectacular. And on a 120" anamorphic screen, even with upscaling of BD (on an Oppo 103 derived Electrocompaniet), it looked spectacular!!! Surprisingly more detailed which I wasn't really expecting

Kind of like Superbit on DVD.
I really have no complaints on a well-mastered 1080p blu-ray material. It can look amazingly good on a calibrated display. |

4K (native) advantages may be more visible on screen > 120". Not of much use me now.

"Mastered in 4K" Blu-Rays have all the ingredients to make them the best looking BD ever released.
Not only they are mastered from 4k material, but most importantly - they have increased bit-rate, which directly translates to superior image quality (if still 1080p). The avg. bit rate on BD is 20-22Mbps, and "Mastered in 4K" Blu-Rays are said to reach 38-40Mbps. To reach those bitrates and still fit the movie, they have ditched all extra features from those discs. "Mastered in 4K" BDs also feature the extended color gamut (x.v.Color) but that is only relevant to people who own the latest Sony TVs with Triluminous Display technoogy and compatible Sony BR player. |

It was shot on 'analog' film, which was scanned in 4k and fully remastered at Sony Pictures Color Works studios.

Here are some images from my visit to Sony's Color Works studios:
This is how they scan the film tape (to 4k or 8k resolution): Scanned frames are then edited for color balance, missing frames, dust removal etc: Over 1PB (petabyte) of storage - this is just for the editing/remastering: The end result is a 4k classic movie, which can be transfered (downsampled) to 'Remastered in 4k BD' or uploaded in native 4k to Sony $699 FMP-X1 4K media player: http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/07/s...ution-service/ |
