Default 1-Solution to a HOT Room/ Man Cave/Home Theater W/ Pictures of course (tigerhonaker)

Hi Members & Guest,

As some of you know here on (Audio Aficionado) I have what is referred to as a, (Dedicated Home Theater).

And there are others here that also have Home Theaters.

There are many on here that have rooms with a Pool Table, Ping Pong, Man Rooms, Garages, etc.

So, this information below might very well be of benefit to you.

I have for years had issues with cooling my Home Theater.
Some years back I had all the HVAC units Replaced and Up-Graded.
They (Hiller Plumbing & Heating) in Nashville, TN. installed two 3-Ton, dual compressor units.
One is for the downstairs and the other is for the living area upstairs and also the Home Theater through a Zone System.
Everything was going along fairly smooth until the outside temperature gets to 100 degrees and above.
Then the unit for the Upstairs and Home Theater will not cool those areas down.

I should mention here that this was not a major issue in the past as I would be working and Home after the Sun would go down.
Plus, I was only in the Home Theater for a few hours each evening.
Time passed and I retired and wanted to fully take advantage of the Home Theater.
But, bad luck because the Runco projector decided to shut down at different times while watching things in the Home Theater.
So, still not really using the Home Theater like I wanted to.

Time passes and I was able to do a Major Up-Grading of components in the Home Theater.
That included a New Runco VX-11 projector.

Now I could and did want to use the Home Theater many hours at a time.

Meanwhile summer hits and hits hard here where I live.
Temperatures go to Plus 100-Degrees and stay there for days on end.
I quickly find out that the Home Theater as well as the living areas upstairs could not be cooled down.
In fact one week they went to 80-Degrees when it was 109 degrees outside and that same week everyday was 100 or more.

I placed a call to Hiller Plumbing & Heating and talked with their Managers.
Documented with pictures of what was happening in the Home Theater with temperature.
Also same for the living area upstairs.

Hiller came out, actually three Mangers came out together to check things out and to see what solutions they could suggest to get things in order.
They did their thing and later I got a call and the answer to the Heat issue was the following.

They said what was needed was a completely separate Heat-Pump called a Split-Unit by Samsung.
It's capacity is 2-tons.
It actually does both, Heat & A/C.
I did as always jump on Google and read up on the unit.
I saw where one of the recommended uses for it was, guess what, a Home Theater.

We sat up a time for Hiller to come out and do the install.
This is something I have to say in most cases will not take place.
Not only did the Techs show-up, but in a separate truck comes the HVAC Main Manager in person.
Yes, not the Managers under him, but him, (Shane) came to actually work and over see the complete install.
They got to the house early and completed the install in the evening.
No fooling around at all, just jumped in and did their thing.
Shane the (Manager) did the electrical and also made some suggestions along the way to the other two techs at times.
Plus helping those guys through the day.
Yes, Shane got his hands "Dirty".

Now you might think this is the end of this Story, right?
Here is the rest of the Story.
Shane and one of his Master Techs is coming next week to check the system out to make sure everything is as it should be.
And, No I did "Not" ask them to do this.
They, (Shane) just called and ask if it was okay for Him and his Tech to come back by and make sure everything was functioning correctly?
Of course I said, (See you guys next week and thanks).

Below are a number of pictures of the complete install.
Did I mention Shane had the Samsung in-house-unit taken apart and painted, (Flat Black).
It comes in, (Bright White) for the in-house-unit.
Obviously that would not work in a Home Theater with it Shining back into the room.
When the three Managers came out, Shane said we are going to have to get the Samsung painted for this install.

Here are the pictures:

I don't think a lot of words or explanation are needed as it is obvious what is taking place.

You will see all areas, (Before), (During) and (After) they do the install.

Tiger.......Nice clean install. The ductless systems work very well. In my studio and control rooms I use a split ductless system, two air handlers with a single reverse cycle compressor outside. Cools and heats my two rooms perfectly.

Jeff,
The bottom line on choice I left with Hiller Plumbing & Heating.
I simply told them I wanted to make sure as time passed the unit they chose they could service for many years to come.
Turned out that is exactly what they were also taking into consideration.
Looks like to me from reading about the different ones they all are basically the same in operation.
I also wanted a Very Quiet one in operation since it was going in the Home Theater.
It makes really no more noise that the fans in the cubby hole where all my equipment is.
Plus I have two Classe' 201 amps in that space.
There are three temperature controlled dual-fans to cool that gear.
I have the settings on the remote to, low fan, temp at 72 Deg.
With the system on there is no way to hear the Samsung.

Mike,
Yes it is pretty darn quiet.
See my comments above on that.
If you want to know can I hear it with the Home Theater off, yes you can.
But, I can also hear the three sets of dual fans that cool the gear in the cubby hole.
There is probably not a perfect solution to cooling a Home Theater with Zero Noise.
But this to me is certainly one answer to the issue and I can live with it.

Dan,
I really was not even aware of these until Hiller came out and went over my options and the Split-Unit made a lot more sense that the other options.
One thing I like is it just blends in really well with the Flat Black finish on the in house unit mounted high on the wall.
You really to be honest don't even see it even in your peripheral vision while watching a movie.
Of course all sconce lights out.
It would have been a different story if it were left the, (Bright White) Gloss color it comes from Samsung.
Shane the main Mgr. said immediately we are going to have to have this painted in Flat Black to go in this room.

I can if necessary still use the existing 3-Ton HVAC in the Home Theater if needed in the summer when temps go 100-Plus Degrees.
I'm confident when next summer comes the Home Theater is going to be cool.

Terry.....Thanks, looks as they did a nice and clean install.

I did a bit of checking around and would agree they are all very similar within there selected catagory......In my area the LG, Samsung and Misubishi seemed widely used and most popular with the best feedback from customers and contractors I know but i'm sure the other brands are fine too......I ended up with the 12,000 BTU Mistubishi unit which is plenty big I'm told for my 15.5 x 19.5 room I'm building.....Happy Listening!
