Default Why 2 sub?

I have 1 SVS 1000 watt sealed sub providing the low end to my Magnepan 1.7's. I have done alot of reading and many say 2 subs is the way to go.

Can someone please explain in detail what the benifits of 2 subs would be?

Thank

Hi Steve, in brief - it evens out the room modes and provides flatter bass curve for more people. It is possible to tune a single sub so that it sounds flat at the listening position, but the sub will be working harder and people who are listening off-axis will hear lumpier bass.

Contrary to common belief, bass is not omnidirectional. You can in fact localize a sub if it pressurizes one ear more than the other. And if you drive a sub into breakup, it will produce higher order harmonics. The third harmonic of a 80Hz signal is 360Hz - easily localizable.

I have one with intentions to add another when possible, not so sure now. It sounds quite well, unable to close my eyes and point to where the bass is coming from. My friends think the same.

Steve.......In his book "Get Better Sound", Jim Smith has a good explanation about using two subwoofers, and makes a strong case for it. If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. There is a ton of useful information for audio enthusiasts between the covers.

Thanks Dan.

There are many articles on the Internet explaining in great details why multiple subwoofers are better than just a single one.

Just goggle Multiple Subwoofers.

* In brief; it evens out the bass, more balanced by using more room boundaries.
...Less peaks, and less nulls. ...And from a larger listening area.

** Two subs are much better than just one.

**** And Four subs is best.

---> That is for a normal (large) size Home Theater room. ...Say 20 feet by 28 feet or so. Or even slightly larger.

For a much smaller room, two subs usually do the trick. ...Better than just one.
And if the room is truly small, just get two small subs.
