Both very different approaches. I wonder which one is correct, or if both are correct?
A tweeter being much more directive than at ower frequencies, I assume Avalon tries to use diffraction by the grill to correct dispersion pattern... I would say... good luck! it is very difficult to control effect of the grill across the frequency range, it seems to me like a stupid idea when you use drivers which are supposed to be as linear and as transparent as possible.
I had speakers from tons of different brands in the past, they all sounded better without the grills- nothing specific to Magico here.
The good thing with Magico grills is that they are fixed with small magnets. It is very easy to remove them for a critical listening session.

The avalon has the felt fitted into those grills. Just like the Wilsons, the difference beeing Wilson puts the felt on the speaker itself.
