Featuring :Geshild Ramberger, alto, with the Bavarian Radio and Cantemas Children's Choirs

Default Bernstein Mahler set on LP

Seen at Acoustic Sounds:

Leonard Bernstein - Mahler: Bernstein Conducts Mahler-The Vinyl Edition

(15 LP + Download Code)

$270 (Coming July 07, 2017 )

"Sony Classical is now releasing Bernstein's legendary recordings of the complete Mahler Symphonies with the New York Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra (plus the Kindertotenlieder with Jennie Tourel and Janet Baker) on LP, the format these recordings were made for, on 180-gram audiophile vinyl. The set comes with the original facsimile sleeves and labels and the original liner notes plus an essay by the famous German writer on music, Klaus Geitel."

Leonard Bernstein, conductor
New York Philharmonic
London Symphony Orchestra

Set Contents:
LP 1: MS 7069: Symphony No. 1 in D Major "Titan"
LP 2-3: M2S 695: Symphony No. 2 in C Minor "Resurrection"
LP 4-5: M2S 675: Symphony No. 3 in D Minor
LP 6: MS 6152: Symphony No. 4 in G Major
LP 7-8: M2S 698: Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor & Kindertotenlieder
LP 9-11: M3S 776 Symphony No. 6 in A Minor, "Tragic" & Symphony No. 9 in D Major
LP 12-13: M2S 739: Symphony No. 7
LP 14-15: M2S 751: Symphony No. 8 in E-Flat Major

I believe this is Bernstein's first Mahler cycle recorded between 1960-67. The Eigth is with the London Symphony and the rest with the New York Philharmonic. (His 1980s cycle was on DG.)

It used to be Mahler sets on LP were rare. Nowadays there's: San Fran Symphony, Bernstein set on Analogphonic, Bernstein set from Sony. At least the per LP cost is reasonable. I wish for the Analog Productions treatment.

The far left partial album cover in the small graphic is the 2nd Symphony. This recording is recommended elsewhere on this thread. Gotta wonder if Sony will allow these to be sold separately at some point.

My impressions from last night:

First listen to this.
So far so good; seems like a magnificent performance and the 5.0 sound is utterly great.

For the Symphony 2 fans in the audience, here is a relatively recent Resurrection Symphony on the Italian Fonè label. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the Orchestra e Coro Teatro Regio Torino, which I gather is a regional group.

And its got pure analog origins (hoo-ray!). Available on LP and SACD. This label typically offers excellent sound. I think I'll order a copy.

A nice review here.

Thanks for pointing this out, Tim.

I'm looking forward to the BIS Mahler 2 from the Minnesotans.

I attended the live performance on June 17 and the sonic energy generated by the orchestra was overwhelming. Osmo Vanska did not hold anything back.

Here is very fine 2-LP Mahler 3 from Zubin Mehta and the LA Philharmonic. Pressed by Analogue Productions! "Mastered by noted mastering engineer Willem Makkee from the original tapes on a Neumann VMS 80 lathe."
