Meet the upcoming Boulder 3050 monos that weights a whooping 400lbs each.

Heh, it looks like somebody dropped them

A Boulder amp and an ARC Ref 150 I saw yesterday prompted this post. They both are pretty huge. I can image how gigantic some of the these amps are that people are posting.

Not kidding! My wife started to pack my bags when I told her I wanted a pair of Levinson 33 in our bedroom.

She probably meant I need to buy a Bigga Abode.

Well, some of them are pretty Huge. Even Krell MRA and all.

But this guy from Italy tops it all. That crazy Italian made an amp out of the lunar landing module.

YUP, THAT'S THE KING AMP you see in the above post.

The Pivetta Opera. 20,000 watts and about $600,000 USD.

I'll take two!

Speaking of size ....

Written on the mirror above my bed, it says "objects in mirror are larger than they appear"

OK here is a large set of speakers No illusion

It was over $125 k for a set of right and left speakers, in the 4 cabinets. They were diamond black piano lacquer and had special mods above the base units shown here. PS back in 80 to 88.

I saw and listened to these in South Pasadena and they were connected with 40k of speaker cable to some monster Krell amps ( many of them)

The speakers weighed in about over 1200lbs each and included a 220 volt 2000 watt amp per speaker in the bass units. You use your own amp in Tri amp . biwiring to connect to the mids and highs.

They did sound pretty amazing. Better than even a real piano could ever sound. IMOP

These specs are per channel right side pair or a single left side pair.

Introduced: IRS: 1980
Introduced: IRS V: 1988
Dimensions: Bass Tower: 228 x 52 x 73 cm
Dimensions: Mid/High Tower: 228 x 119 x 43 cm
Wight: Bass Tower: 681 kg (system) THAT is over 1400 lbs per side!
Bass: 6 x 30 cm
Mids: 12 x EMIM
Highs: 36 x EMIT (12 on the back)
Suggested for amplifiers with: 100-300 Watts per Mid/High channel (bass towers have their own 2000 Watts amplifier)
Frequency range: 15 Hz - 45 kHz

Wonder if they were called IRS for Internal Revenue Service

The guy who demoed that for your must have known the guy who wanted me to buy the $40,000 speaker cables. I passed on that one. That guy does have one terrific room. The speakers were the Infinity Reference Standard. I believe it was The Absolute Sound that gave it the nickname "IRS" but it was really done as a joke.

I think the largest of the speaker systems is the Transmission Audio Ultimate. It is a solid wall of speakers 32 feet wide-for left and right channels. You need a REALLY BIG ROOM for these--I would say a minimum of 2000 square feet and 3000 square feet would probably be better. Each channel has 20 15" subwoofers, 24 8" woofers and 34 meters of ribbons. Capable of 146dB SPL. You too can have one for $2MIL.

It makes the IRS look tiny.

Dave...in the most recent Stereophile there is a great interview with Arnie Nuddell, founder of Infinity and designer of the speakers you are talking about and IRS stands for Infinity Reference Standard I think the IRS speakers are still highly sought after.

(edit: oops, I just realized that Gary had already stated what IRS stands for and he obviously knows because I just noticed his avatar ). Gary, can the IRS speakers still be found? Is there someone who can maintain/mod them if one were to buy an old pair? Just curious. Thx)
