okay, I think I found the culprit. I tried changing power cords, plugging into the wall, turning the conditioning off on the 948 and none of that worked. Finally, I changed speaker cables. I had some Western Electric 10 Gage cable hooked up, but it was just loose wires, no connectors or spades or anything. It worked fine, but yesterday I had a new tv delivered and I think one of the installers may have stepped on it and perhaps damage the cable somehow. Anyway, I changed the speaker cables and now everything works fine. I can turn the volume up and the orange light does not come on at all. So good for now. So can a speaker cable not connected right or perhaps a damage cable could have caused the issue?

YES good deal, that was what I was thinking a direct load short, like a wrench on a battery across the terminals McIntosh saves the day.. no damage I am sure

If the wire was loose, perhaps it was touching the chassis which in another amp would
probably have meant caboom. Great to hear that your amp is working with no issues.

Once again, it looks like the McIntosh protection circuit(s) worked. I keep saying this, they are the real deal.

Sounds like McIntosh should advise owners of this protection indication in the manuals.

I'm having a similar issue with my MC7205. Both the front right and rear right PG light is lit and will not reset. This has happened a few times over the years for no apparent reason and it always goes away when I turned the power off for a few seconds and then turned it back on. No luck this time, the two channels are quite and the PG light remains on. Any ideas?

So you have tried your amp with no speaker cables connected to it and
still the PG lights are on when starting it? I guess you don't hear the relays' sound
like a second or so after turning it on.

Hi...the correct procedure would be on a test bench, hooked up to a load box, and being able to bring the amp up to power with a variac while monitoring the output with an oscilloscope. In most cases I monitor the AC current draw to look for impending doom.
Hypothetically, if a voltage regulator fails the distortion could go over 50 %causing both PG circuits to drop the input signal 40-50 dB.
