I also just got the oppo Bluray player and it is really good! I had a Denon 3910 that I moved up to the bedroom system. The oppo makes standard DVDs look great as well as BluRay discs. I have not upgraded my display yet so I am limited to 720p. My first choice is the Pioneer 60" kuro, but economics are nudging me to look at the 58" Panasonic.

Haven't got the Salamander yet.

I'm still in the process of ironing out all the small details. For example, the electrician who is supposed to move my 20 amp circuits from one room to another is coming later this week. I still need to acquire an articulate wall mount. I'm thinking this mount from Peerless.

(Sounds great in fact.)

I suppose this is the McIntosh message (mailed a fish) to Sacd's multi technology, "it was born in a grave."

The Oppo looks like my next purchase.
I currently like the PS3 better then all my other Bluray players but it does not bitstream over HDMI. So I have to decode in it. Not sure I will hear a difference but it will trigger a few more "on" lights in the AVR.

Thanks for the write up!
Bottom line, you won't be disappointed with the 83.

Yeah, bitstreaming to your pre/pro will light a few more lights. And it never gets old seeing the DTS-HD MA light up.

Congrats mike175gr! I agree, the 83 is a damn fine player.

Good luck on your plasma search. If you can find a good deal on a Kuro, you won't regret buying it.

The new 2009 Panasonic V10 series plasma is very good too. The sizes come in 50", 54", 58", and 65".

How does it sound in 2-channel analog output?

This months short write-up in Stereophile indicate that they improved those from the previous model.

I haven't used it for anything other than blu-ray/DVD playback. With the MCD500 in the system, I've no reason to use the 83 for 2 channel listening.

I do have a handful of DVD-A's left over from my Lexicon RT10 days. I might give them a spin here sometime.

Just the opposite for me I have no use for video. The reason I asked is Audio only blu-ray in theory should sound better than CD. You could access the music without the video feed.

With your discerning tastes, I think you'll probably be disappointed in the analog output. From what I read, it's pretty average. However, you can get the 83 modded with an upgraded analog section, which is nice.

Agree - I have spent a decent amount of time with the 2 channel analog output of the Oppo and it is pretty good for a $500 player and from what I have heard, the best analog stage out of any of the players Oppo has manufactured to date. That said, I'm not sure that the stock analog stage listening to Blu-Ray audio would be "better" than listening to a higher end SACD player like the MCD500. That would be an interesting comparison to make...

And yes, there are analog modifications available for the Oppo, including this one mentioned here at the AA board: http://audioaficionado.org/modwright...modwright.html I believe Dan Wright will be able to share even more information about these mods shortly...
